    I ordered what I thought was a copy of my grandfather's birth certificate from the GRO. I got a PDF copy because I thought it would be quicker and cheaper. I'll attach a copy of what I received. Did I just pay £7 for something I already knew for free from other sites?

    I found her marriage to James Ross Steel and it lists her as a widow at 32 and James was a bachelor aged 39 which I though was unusual, and their address was the same. So it looks like they were living together before marriage, which must have been shocking for the time.

    That would make sense, my grandmother Annie Miller Steel was born in 1907. This is the first record that even suggested there was a previous name and/or marriage. Thank you.

    Elizabeth Jane (no maiden name) There was only 2 Robert Jones the right age, and only 1 whose father was William Jones. £5 well spent, I think

    If they are in Spennymoor, there is only 4 on the 1911 census that are around the right age. Thank you so much.... I still don't know where to go from here, but it has narrowed the field! It looks like I will have to spend out on the 1921 census (I was hoping to avoid it for a while)

    The date of the marriage was 8/8/1939... probably equally important to get my grandmother married off as my mother was born 4 months later!
