I think Annie's mother was Dorathy CHAMBERS - in 1881 she is aged 24 and living with her parents, James & Elizabeth in Alma Road, Woolston, South Stoneham. Annie is not with her.

By 1891 Dorothy is in Hull married to Frank O'CONNOR. Annie is with them, aged 12...
It's strange that you can find no reference to Annie before 1891. I've looked and can't see her either. :confused:
Have you tried writing to the register office at Southampton? Her birth may have been omitted from the GRO indexes.
Another place that might be worth checking is the baptism...
If this man was leading a double life it may have come to light after his death.
Did he leave a will?
Have you searched newspapers for missing persons advertisements, reports of scandal or bigamy?
As for the TRODDS - I'm frustrated :(

I've been trying to search The Gazette for more entries for Richard TRODD but the print is too poor for the software to recognise the characters. :(
I feel that Richard is a possible candidate to be John's father - if I could find out that he was in prison when John was born, I could eliminate...
