    Looking for my grandmother

Thanks again Julie. It looks as if the daughter, Maggie, is the Margaret I'm looking for but I'm still confused as to why she doesn't appear with this family on the 1891 census when she would have been 4. Next I suppose is to look for her on the 1911 census.

    Looking for my grandmother

Thanks Julie. This does look like the right Andrew Hetherington. Right age and his job is as stated on Margaret's marriage cert. If the Margaret shown as his wife is my Margaret's mother, where is Margaret amongst her listed children? If she was only 26 as she gave as her age on her marriage...

    Looking for my grandmother

I can't make the maths work on that one Julie. If her son Andrew was Margarets father he would only be 5 when she was born. I looked at that Margaret in case she was the mother of the Margaret I'm looking for but her children are too old in 1901. My Margaret would be 7 in 1901. If, as rumour has...

    Looking for my grandmother

Hi Ben. In your reply on 4th March you ask for info from the marriage cert which I now have. Margaret's father is named as Andrew Hetherington (deceased). Her residence is given as 21 Molyneux St, Longsight, Manchester (my father remembers that as his grandmother's address) and her occupation as...

    Looking for my grandmother

Hi Ken, On the marriage certificate of William Edward Dorber to Margaret Hetherington (no middle name stated) William is aged 24 years. The residence for both of them is given as 21 Molyneux St, Longsight, Manchester. I know that is correct as that is my father's grandmother's home, Harriet...

    Looking for my grandmother

Thanks Ken but I fear we have athe wrong parent. I've just received today the copy of the marriage certificate of William Edward Dorber and Margaret Hetherington. Married on 2nd February 1918 at St Josephs Catholic Church, Longsight, Manchester. Margaret's father is named as Andrew Hetherington...

    Looking for my grandmother

Thanks Julie. I've emailed the music hall artists site you've given and we'll see if they are of any help. The GH Elliot site doesn't offer any option to email them for info on his tour details but the artists' site may be of help. Kennethmar1 has found her on the 1891c living in perth St...

    Looking for my grandmother

Thanks again Ken. Just got your latest on the 1891c. It's a big help as it places her in Manchester when she was 4 and not Ireland as we believed. Also your research throws up a sibling of whom I knew nothing. He's going to have to be a new line of enquiry later on. Jacqui

    Looking for my grandmother

Thanks Ken for the info on her whereabouts on the 1911 census at the age of 22. Cheetham is an area of Manchester I know about and I've found the road on a map. Hopefully someone will guide me in finding a way to track her back from there. I've been told that she was a speciality dancer who...

    Looking for my grandmother

I would like to find out when and why Margaret Dorber was committed to Winwick Mental Hospital. Their website is not very helpful. I'm also hoping that I may find a photograph of her. My father, who is 90 this year, has always been sad that he has never had a photograph of her and he must have...

    Looking for my grandmother

Thanks Ben & Julie for your guidance. I've ordered the marriage cert and Margaret Dorber's death cert; we'll see what they show up. I believe Margaret Dorber (nee Hetherington) may have been from Ireland which is why she doesn't show up on the 1901 census. Jacqui

    1901 Census search

How do I go about looking at the 1901 Census for Longsight, Manchester. The family name is Dorber and I remember my dad saying he lived on Mornington St and his grandmother lived nearby on Molyneux St. This would be post 1919 when my father was born. I'm looking for my paternal grandmother...

    Looking for my grandmother

Hi Julie, Margaret Dorber was my grandmother's married name though she was always know as Madge. Her maiden name was Heatherington or Hetherington. I don't know the exact spelling. She married William Dorber and my father, her eldest child, was born in Dec 1919. Any ideas on where to go from...

    Looking for my grandmother

I want to find out about my grandmother, Margaret Dorber, who was in Winwick Hospital for many years and died there sometime in the 50's. Very little is known about her except that she was a speciality dancer in her pre-marital days. She lived in Longsight, Manchester before being committed to...
