Greetings from Co Waterford. I came across your message re Guiry of Knockmeal by accident. Where is your research at? (pardon the grammar!). As I live in the area I am willing to enquire, but you may have all the info you want by now. Noel.

    Church records released online

Saw your reference to Co Waterford Hamiltons by chance. There are Roman Catholic Hamiltons in Dungarvan where I live. To my knowledge they are there for a few generations.

Evans, Patrick John b. 23/5/1876 and McCann, Agnes Maria b. 21/12/1876

Thanks Mike, in huge measure, once again. Mrs Macklin was so pleased with the info on Richard Macklin/Ellen Power that she has now become interested in her own side of the family history. You're a happy man I'd say, with the Reds, and I wish you and family health and happiness for 2011. Noel.

Patrick John Evans, parents Thomas Evans and Louisa (Nee Webster) of 4, Church Avenue, Irishtown, Dublin, married Agnes Maria McCann b. at the Church of St James, James St, Dublin on 22.01.1899. They had seven children, including Thomas, Patrick, Christina, William and Louisa Agnes (who was born...

    Macklin, Richard WW1 Dead

Will do re Belfast forum. In the 1911 census widow Mary Anne Macklin is in Great George's St, Belfast, with son Richard Edward, labourer aged 19, and daughter Mary 17, both born in England. I think there may have been another son, John, in residential military school in Dublin.

    Macklin, Richard WW1 Dead

With HUGE help from another amateur genealogist encountered on these forums I have a copy of James Macklin's service record. He was born in Lambeth in 1856 and gave his age as 17 when he enlisted in the 63rd regiment in 1870,at Westminster. In 1891, the year Richard was born, James lived in...

    Macklin, Richard WW1 Dead

Ben, thank you VERY much; all that fits. Richard's English father and soldier, James, had died and his mother had moved back to her native Belfast. Richard had enlisted at age 14/15 and been discharged 'services no longer required' after a year. Perhaps he used a similar name to remain...

    Macklin, Richard WW1 Dead

Thanks Guys. Richard Junior was born in Dungarvan, Co Waterford 6 months after his father died in the war, i.e. Oct 19th 1916. Mother's maiden name was Ellen Power, aged 5 at the time of the 1901 census, daughter of Thomas and Mary, who lived in Boreenatra, Dungarvan. Richard Senior's father was...

    Macklin, Richard WW1 Dead

Inscription on Headstone in Bethune Cemetery in northern France. "In Memory of Private Richard Macklin, Leinster Regiment 7th Batt. No. 2453, who died age 35 on 12 May 1916. Husband of Ellen Macklin, of Lower Strand St., Dungarvan, Co. Waterford, Ireland. Remembered with honour." Any help with...

    Griffiths, William George b.1852

The Ireland census of 1911 refers to a 44-year marriage, indicating 1866 or '67, and Ellen being 16. I realize, of course, that the Brennan maths may have been suspect. Is it likely that Ellen received her nurse training in the army, having enlisted at 14 or 15? And, I presume that Michael was...

    Griffiths, William George b.1852

I hope that experienced searchers will guide me re the Brennan stuff. If Michael Brennan was an army tailor and his wife Ellen was an army nurse, perhaps they married when posted abroad, e.g. in Quebec or Malta etc. I gather they married c.1866/'67, when she was sixteen and he twenty-three. I am...

    Griffiths, William George b.1852

Now I have learned that William George Griffiths enlisted in the army in Malta, giving his birth place as Quebec. His father William was a soldier, possibly from Wales, and possibly posted to Canada at the time, and Malta later; I have also learned that, after his wife Caroline died in 1880...

    Griffiths, William George b.1852

I am very grateful for all the help from both of you, and much of the mystery has been 'put to bed'. Only a few days ago I still thought that Caroline White's family were from York, and that William George Griffiths was a Welshman who disappeared off the face of the earth once his wife died. Now...
