I have looked at these census's and looked at Essendon parish records. It does seem to me that the birth that I have for William James in 1859 is my great grandfather later known as James William, even on his marriage certificate.
I understand that my great grandfather, James William Clark, was born in Essendon, Herts (recollection of an elderly relative so not 100% sure).
My grandmothers birth certificate shows her father as James William Clark. I have his marriage certificate dated 4 feb 1882 marrying Selina Saunders...
I have already started to look at the Catholic angle, contacting the Catholic Family History Society and also St George's Cathedral where John and Ellen were married. Both have replied and are now trying to help. I will also try the Catholic Heritage as suggested.

Peter

Thank you Amanda.
It's always possible that she could have been known by her middle of Bridget. I looked up FMP and there are a number of Bridgets so I'll keep looking.
Strangely her marriage certificate shows just Agnes and her death certificate shows Agnes Bridget. I also wonder if her birth...
My grandmother was Agnes Bridget Hickey and according to her marriage certificate and several census returns she was born about 1880 in Westminster. Her father was John and a builder at the time of her marriage in 1901. Her mother may have been Mary. Unfortunately I cannot find the birth of...
