    Elizabeth Raven - Maiden Name

I have my notes here on another tab: b. 1850, Witham, Essex Possibly married in Saffron Hill, 1869, to Charles Thomas Tayler. Charles' Father's job is "cartman" and, in 1861 and 1871 census for Thomas Tayler, his occupation is "Hackney Carriage Driver", so that lends weight to this being the...

    Elizabeth Raven - Maiden Name

I need to read through these when I'm not quite so tired because there are a lot of Ravens flapping about! ;) I was having trouble with the occupation, because William Raven seemed to flit from being a farm labourer, to an architect, to a gardener, to a baker! I definitely had Walter down as...

    Elizabeth Raven - Maiden Name

There is a marriage for Emily Raven and Charles Thomas Tayler in 1869 in Holborn, London. Not sure why they would have got married there, but a lot of my ancestry ties up with London, so I wouldn't exclude it. It also fits well with the birth date of Amelia.

    Elizabeth Raven - Maiden Name

1871 census shows Amelia C Tayler as 7 months old. Her mother Emily Tayler is 20, meaning her birth year is approximately 1851. 1881 census shows Emily as 30. 1891 census says she is 42, which is slightly out, but it does suggest she consistently gave ages for a birth date 1851 or earlier...

    Elizabeth Raven - Maiden Name

I had a look into this again and the ages seem to map out better if you go for Emily Raven, daughter of William Raven and Sarah Ansell. It would mean she married at 19, not 16. Later census records also seem to corroborate better with the 1851 birth date than the 1854 birth date. I'll list some...

    Elizabeth Raven - Maiden Name

I'm a bit stuck on the branch of my family which has the interesting surname - Raven. I have traced my 2nd great grandmother Amelia Clara Tayler on Ancestry as being the child of Charles Tayler and Emily Tayler née Raven, born in Chelmsford 1851-1854. I have checked GRO and possibly found Emily...

    Dobbins information

I'm leaning towards a marriage in India, to be honest, for the dates to match up. Without a confirmed maiden name though, I cannot be 100% sure when her birth date was, but it does tie up with the 1911 census where she says she is 51. I'm using Mahoney as a potential name to gather further...

    Dobbins information

I have Hannah's birth date down tentatively as 1861. If Joseph was sent to India directly from Gibraltar, then that would, more-or-less, confirm an Indian marriage. Would he have required special dispensation from commanding officers to marry? If so, I wonder if this may be in records held by...

That site led me to Findmypast where I managed to grab this excerpt from the Londonderry Sentinel " Hamilton, New York, Bov. J. 0, Hsmilloo, formerly minister of Rutland equate Church, Dublin. April 18, suddenly. Sergeant Joseph Dobbins, Battalion Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, aged 38 years...

    Dobbins information

I'm quite new to this, so I'm unsure exactly how far out "out" can be, so I definitely will not write Henry Joseph off just yet :) I wonder why it is so difficult to find a marriage record for them, though? I've had no trouble with other ancestors. If they did not marry in England or India...

    Dobbins information

This is intriguing because the obituary clearly says that Henry Joseph was 30 years old in 1917, which does not quite add up. Certainly warrants some more investigation. I have found a Joseph Dobbins death registered in Chortley, Lancashire in 1900. Given the fact he was serving with the Loyal...

    Dobbins information

So many leads here. These are excellent. I shall have fun digging into these this evening and seeing what I can reconstruct. Bedford Row was indeed where my 2x great grandfather, Thomas Carroll, was living when he married Eva in 1905. That could explain, regardless of where Joseph was from, how...

    Dobbins information

Dave, that's fantastic, because that corroborates with the medal card I found listing a Sergeant Joseph Dobbins as serving with the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment (Loyal Lincoln Volunteers back in the Second Afghan War, but amalgamated into the L.N.L in 1881). I'm trying to find Hannah's maiden...

    Dobbins information

(Can't seem to edit that post above, so I'll have to add another!) I just put Hannah in as Joseph's wife on ancestry and a record flagged up from "India: Select Births, Deaths and Baptisms 1786-1947" for a Hannah and Joseph Dobbins with a "match" child name. Unfortunately, I don't have...

    Dobbins information

Firstly, how on Earth did you find that?! Also...middle names! That could explain it. Would it be common to have a middle name as a first name on a marriage certificate? It definitely says Eva on there, but everything else is spot on. Even birth date. Thanks so much :D
