On the 1861 Wales census there is this family:
Estimated birth year: abt 1859
Father's name: James
Mother's name: Mary A
Where born: Monmouthshire, Wales
Civil Parish or Township: Monmouth
Ecclesiastical parish: Llandaff...
Sometimes it's impossible to find out why a surname changed. Surnames changed in many ways for many reasons, it could be that the family wanted to distance themselves from someone or something. It could also be that they moved to a different area and that their accent lead to registrars etc...
Ancestry do a 14 day free trial which is probably worth your while to see if you can find the info you're looking for and the 1881 census is free to look at, so I'd recommend using them before you decide whether to subscribe or not, saying that, I've found so much from ancestry.co.uk I think...
I got the information from ancestry.co.uk I have a subscription which give me access to all the UK census data.
To get maiden names you could search for marriages on freebmd.org.uk where they have transcribed a lot of Birth Death and Marriage records and are continually updating the database...
I've checked the 1901 census and there are two John H Thomas born in Liverpool, one ABT 1898 and one ABT 1900.
The relationships I've copied from the census return and are relationship to the HEAD of the family.
Do you think either of these could be him?
Re: hi all
Welcome to the forum! I'm fairly new the the forum myself, but if you get stuck or need advice on where to look/what to look for there's some good people on here who will be glad to help you!
I have a number of Scottish ancestors who all had unusual middle names, and it seems that there was a tradition of naming children after family members and close friends but including the whole name!
For example, my g-grandmother: Isabella Gerrard Meldrum Eden was named after a womand...
Do you think your grandmother was born in the UK? Adoption in the UK wasn't formalised until the mid 1920s so it's unlikey to find any documentation as before this children were just taken on by the adoptive family as they're own. Do you have anymore information about her?
Re: 1891 Census Middlesex
I've had a look and the only Abbott born in Sydney that I can see after 1881 is in the 1901 census a Henry Abbott b1856 living in London so it looks like the two boys left England before 1891.
Can't see any Ann Fitzgerald that fits but this does this look like your Joseph Leo Lancaster?
Name: Joseph Leo Lancaster
Estimated birth year: abt 1895
Father's name: John
Mother's name: Elizabeth
Where born: Preston, Lancashire, England
I'm Becky I'm 26, mum to Lucy, married to Chris. I work in IT for the local council and in my free time I indulge in my addiction to my family tree! It's Lucy's 2nd birthday tomorrow which will be fun!
I've found this site very useful, and should definitely be the first place to look for anyone trying to find out about relatives who died during either the Great War or WW2. It also has information about the cemetary/memorial where the individual is remembered.
