Thank you all for your replies. Yes, I have that information that you stated in your replies. Ethel Read, nee Gage, remains a bit of a mystery. 1901 census, there is a Ethel Read living in Croydon and from Durham and her age matches, but she is shown as single, however perhaps by then the...

    Read

Ethel Read or Reade, nee Gage, was rumoured to have been killed during an air raid in WWII, but I have been unable to find any record. She was born in 1875 in Durham County, married Edward Read in 1895 and they had a son, Alfred Read, b. 1897. 1901 census show Alfred living with his...

    Ethel Read or Reade

For Robsur. Thanks for your reply but unfortunately the "Henley" Ethel Read is not the one I am searching for, although the age would be about right. Rumour was the Ethel Read I am looking for moved to Sunderland area prior to WWII, which might make sense if she was originally from...

    Ethel Read or Reade

I think I have tracked Ethel except for where and when she died. Briefly, she was born Ethel Gage, in 1875 at Houghton-le-Spring, Durham. She was the 2nd. child of several children born to George and Mary Gage. George was a coal-miner, so not likely any inheritence from the parents. She...

    Genealogy Websites

To Woodlander: Thanks for your reply. I guess the route to go IS to subscribe to two or more genealogy websites! Pardon my ignorance but what is "the A one"? I used "thegenealogist.uk.co" for awhile, but they don't have the latest census nor parish records from the northern part of England...

    Genealogy Websites

Does anyone out there know of a genealogy website that offers complete records in, lets say, the main areas of genealogy research? For example, a website has fairly complete and accurate records of BMD, but not all parish records or the latest census (1911) records are available. Or, a website...

Rooming House Residents after 1911 England census.

Hi. Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, it is not the owner of the rooming house I am looking for, only one of the tenants. Obviously an ancestor of mine, a lady, but was not living there at the time of the 1911 census. I would like to know if she had one or two children with her in late...

Rooming House Residents after 1911 England census.

I am still having trouble trying to find a list of residents at a 'rooming house' in Hampstead, London for late 1912 and 1913. The address in question is 41 Rosslyn Hill and the last name I am searching for is either Gage, Read or Reade. Any comments/suggestions appreciated. Thank you.

    Census Accuracy.

Thanks for your replies. Hi Josie, sorry but the date and age are out by about 20 years or so. Quite certain that is not the Brown I am searching for. I would really like to know if there was anyone else in his household, as previous census records show him as single, and the London Directory...

    Census Accuracy.

Anyone have any idea just how 'accurate' these census' are? Also, how accurate the transcripts from them are? I realize errors are bound to happen, but sometimes the errors are so obvious it seems no one bothers to 'proof read' anything. To be more precise, I know that Durward Brown...

    Ethel Read or Reade

To juliejtp: Thanks for your reply. I tried going through that National Archives website but got totally confused! I admit I am somewhat of a newby to using computers. I did find a "casualties of world war 2' but could not get pass that line.

    Ethel Read or Reade

To Robesur: Thanks for your reply. I know there are several spellings for 'Read', but in my family as far as I can determine it seems we either drop or add the last 'e'! So I think it unlikely that Ethel's death would be listed as Reid, Reed, or Rhead. Certainly the age would fit, 1941, age...

    Read family

To juliejtp: Thanks for your reply. That may be the Ethel Read, if she is from Durham, but it would mean that her marriage to Edward Read, in 1895, didn't last very long!

    Ethel Read or Reade

Verbal family history is that Ethel Reade was killed during WWII bombing raid, but I have been unable to find any record of that fact. The problem is I always thought she lived in Sunderland at that time, but I could be mistaken. Because of other documents I believe she was still alive in...

    Durward Brown

Thanks for your replies to my inquiry about Durward Brown. Seems he was a reasonably well known architect in London around 1910 and later. Several building, mostly hotels it seems are credited to him. Also in the 'social' pages of local newspaper, fashionably well-dressed etc.,

Hi, I'm new kid on the block!

To p.risboy: Thanks for your reply. The address I have for Ethel Read at that time (late 1912/1913) was a rooming house, and unlikely she would have a telephone listing of her own.

    Ethel Gage

To Kinshar; Thanks for your reply. It confirms what information I have, though I didn't have info on siblings. I just do not know how Ethel got from Durham to London?

    Read family

To Robesur; I am in the process of obtaining b/c, m/c, etc. The only Ethel Gage I found that married a "Read, Reade, etc" was the one born at Houghton. I know from conversations with family (all deceased now), she was in London in 1911/1913, but not listed on the 1911 census. Interesting...

    Read family

Trying to find Edward Read, wife Ethel but without success. Did I miss something? Ethel was born at Houghton-le-Spring, Durham about 1875, married Edward at Weardale 1895. They may have moved to London area by 1901 census. No children at this time I do not believe.

    Margaret Allan

To emeltee: Thanks for the list of names, but not sure if that in the Allan family I seek. I do not think there is an Irish or Scottish connection. Allan was the spelling of Margaret and her 3 children but errors could occur. Allen was another common spelling.
