    Uploading gedcoms

Thanks, Ladybird. I knew about the merge option - Ancestry quite often seems to turn updates into duplicates by not recognising that the person already exists! But the add person is new to me, I shall check that out. O0 I was rather hoping to merge whole files in the same way that Legacy8 does...

    Uploading gedcoms

Just enjoyed the free weekend on FMP thanks to a heads-up on here. I uploaded what I already had in Gedcom format as a base for the FMP research. After adding some sources & people to my tree I downloaded a gedcom which I used to update my Legacy8 master database. Now I would like to update...

    Proving links in Anc trees.

Had a couple like this where a person dies as an infant & the next born is given the same name. Child deaths are often commemorated in siblings names. My own middle name is for an uncle that died aged 4.

    Some Anestry help needed please.

Just downloaded a Gedcom from the current Ancestry file & created a new Legacy8 file. I was then able to compare the old & new Legacy8 files side by side. By using the Pedigree mode it was relatively easy to follow roots & identify differences. I could then switch to family mode to read & retype...

    40% off Ancestry Annual membership

Just a quick update: The 40% offer appeared again on a log-in so I decided to take it up. £69 inc vat. It includes a rolling renewal at full price, so I have diaried out to cancel it before renewal next January. I shall decide then who to renew with - if anyone. As others have pointed out...

    Some Anestry help needed please.

Sorry, my bad. Yes, Legacy will back up files every time you close it, but running two sets of trees (one on Ancestry & one on Legacy) means that error by error they slowly diverge as I forget to add stuff to one or the other. The sensible thing would be to only run one - which is how I was...

    Some Anestry help needed please.

Yes, you can display two side by side as well, but at the moment I just have one file of almost 900 people. The more databases you have, the more risk they get out of step is the reason why I haven't split them.

    40% off Ancestry Annual membership

Just been trying to find it again myself as I deleted the invite e-mail without taking up the offer assuming that is was a general offer, but it may have been targeted at me as a "guest member" with a 900 person family tree on their site. I do still have an e-mail offering 30% off the USA...

    James & Anne Kean, Tamworth

It does seem unlikely then that these Keens are the same family. Oh, well, so it goes!

    James & Anne Kean, Tamworth

That's the one that I believe is him, but there are errors in the transcription as I have seen the microfiche of the original. His birth was actually 1810 & was not in sequence because, as the librarian explained, "Non-conformist baptisms were entered separately & often much later in the...

    James & Anne Kean, Tamworth

Well that suggests that the Keens are a different family from the Keans.

    Henri Porty

It's quite possible that an English Soldier has met a pretty French Girl & gone back to woo her. :kissu::kissu:

    40% off Ancestry Annual membership

That's under 70 quid for the year - only available before Jan 5th 2016 & you will be charged for a full membership (£120) for the following year unless you cancel the auto renewal process before you get billed next year. BTW I am NOT advertising Ancestry, it's just that I haven't seen any...

    James & Anne Kean, Tamworth

Ooh, that's interesting, thanks. I'd been focussed on the specific spelling KEAN because James junior was literate & apparently quite well educated, but that wouldn't mean his father was necessarily! Also I now know that many registers were filled in by officials who would have been told a...

    James & Anne Kean, Tamworth

James & Anne are listed in 1810 as the parents of James Kean Baptised in Tamworth. James senior is listed as a Farmer, but I have not been able to gather any further information on him or his marriage. I would guess it to have been between 1790-1810 and his birth to have been between 1760-1790...

    Some Anestry help needed please.

Cheers Peter, I shall look for that later, but as a fully unpaid cheapskate, I only have the freebie version of L8 so it may not be included. Off to my brother's for a big family gathering today, so I shall be doing my best to gather contacts with other researchers looking at different...

    Some Anestry help needed please.

Just to feed back how it went. I followed Ellie's instructions & saved the Gedcom file. I was then able to import it into my Legacy8 file and merge them. However it created a lot of "duplicate" files (on pretty much everyone in fact) which I suppose was inevitable, but took quite a while to...

Re: Some Ancestry help needed please. Bless you Ellie, that's brilliant, thanks. I'll see what happens when I upload that into Legacy now - making sure I have made a new back up before I start!!!

    Ancestree changed

One really annoying thing is that in the Life Story, where every location is placed in America, you can edit the place names but can't change or delete the stupid map of America! Makes it completely useless.

    Some Anestry help needed please.

Re: Some Ancestry help needed please. The problem is with exporting a gedcom file from Ancestry & linking to my own family tree on Ancestry from a Library account, so Legacy are unlikely to help much. TBH, the Legacy programme is pretty good. I have asked on the Ancestry help pages, but no...
