150 years ago today was the great disaster that shook Sheffield and the whole Nation. In a few minutes without time to alert the sleeping people a huge wall of water swept through the city from Bradfield to Rotherham. Over 240 deaths were reported though it is thought numbers were even higher than that if subsequent deaths and later bodies found are added. It was quite possibly the biggest disaster in British history.
There is a great wealth of searchable resources on the disaster which happened due to the Dale Dyke Dam breaking. If you have Ancestors who lived in Sheffield area at that time there is a list of claimants on this website as well as the whole story of the Sheffield Flood. https://www2.shu.ac.uk/sfca/
There is still a Dale Dyke Reservoir though obviously they rebuilt it.
