1861 lookup please - Mills

Hi there,

Could sks please do a lookup in 1861 census for me, for GEORGE MILLS Born 1848/9 in Reading Berkshire.
I know that he married in Jun Qtr 1872 to Margaret Baker in Greenwich, and their first child Elizabeth was born in Mar Qtr 1872 in Dartford, Kent. In the 1881 census he is shown to be a Ship fender maker. After the birth of their first child, they went on to have Walter George in 1879 Dartford, Margaret Ann in 1881 in Greenwich and Eliza in 1889 in Greenwich. George died in 1889 in Greenwich at the age of about 41 years.

I could not find one for a George Mills born in reading, do you know his father's name by any chance.

Sorry i do not know his father's name. That is what i was hoping to find out
The only information i have on George is what i found in the 1881 census which listed him as being born in Reading.

Hiya Jackie,

I have looked and there are a few possiblities for your George in the census..

the "only" way to be 100% sure which one is yours would be to purchase the marriage certificate from here
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

this will then enable you to correctly track backwards without making false assumptions as to who his father was. (if indeed he was still alive by then)

Date: 2 June 1872
Groom: George Mills, full, bachelor, labourer
Bride: Margaret Baker, full, spinster
Residence Groom: St Nicholas
Residence Bride: St Nicholas
Father Groom: George Mills, cook
Father Bride: John Baker, shipwright
Witnesses: Robert Baker and Stephen Fi(e)tch

george mills born abt 1847 in reading he is a lodger with
william colan born 1848
mary ann colan born 1847
and other lodgers
i cant find nothing before that sorry i will continue to look thow

Thanks Alan. I did have this 1871 census, but not the 1861. Should you find him on 1861 i will be most grateful.
Trying to find his father's birthplace and approx year.
I did find George's christening in 1856 at age 7 years to parents George and Ann.

Where did you find the Christening details please?

I have only found ONE family with a George as a son and parents George/Hannah.

but there seems to be some discrepancy between the DOB's.

Hi Jackie,

A remote possibilty.

In 1861 there is a George Mills born abt 1845 pob transcribed as Yalendon Berkshire occ servant, living in the civil parish of Moulsford, reg district Wallingford, head of house Thomas Howard Hughes. Cant find a place called Yalendon but there is a Yattendon which is 12 miles NW of Reading.
