1881 census request

Location

I am trying to trace the whereabouts of my grandfather William Herbert Kelly born in India December 1863. All his younger brothers, Arthur, Edward, Frederick and George appear in a boarding school in Kings Lynn on the 1881 census but by then my grandfather had left as he would have been 17 years old.

Hi Terry,

In 1881 thee is a William H Kibby (as transcribed by Ancestry) but looking at the census image could possibily be Kelly. He is born India abt 1863. William is on the next page from the Harris family he is shown as stepson.

Hi Julie,
Thank you so much for your reply. I had tried so many variations on the name Kelly but never thought of trying Kibby. This could be a breakthrough. My grandfather lost his mother who died on a voyage home from India; that is why the sons were put into a boarding school. The Harris family seems to fit the bill. My grandfather's mother Mary Elizabeth (Powditch) Kelly had a sister Ann Mary Powditch who married Thomas Gurney Harris. Wills, Norfolk would have been in fact Wells-next-the Sea where the Powditch family lived. Presumably when his mother died and when he left school, my grandfather went to live with his aunt in Hackney. Although not technically so, he was a sort of stepson. Every fact ties in except the date of birth of Ann Mary who was born 3rd March 1835 which would have made her 46 in 1881. I guess this could have been a transcription error.

Hi Julie,
I got so engrossed in my explanations that I forgot to thank you once again and also to sign off. So again many thanks for the info.

hiya Terry,

you could have used familysearch.org (link below)

1881 Census

for the 1881 census, as it is available through the "latter day saints" (LDS) based in Utah, USA, (The Mormons). It is totally Free to use O0

hope this helps

Julie

Hi Julie,
Thanks for your reply re the 1881 census. I did originally look at the LDS site but only found my grandfather's brothers. I did not suspect that his name Kelly would be transcribed as 'Kibby'. Now that I have seen what can happen with transcriptions I will be a little more adventurous when I'm trying out variations on names when I am searching.

hiya,

when performing a search I always try and work on the premise of less is more,

so sometimes I would use wildcarding so that would be say kel*** in the searchbox which would bring up kelly and variants...

having said that I don't think that Familysearch lets you wildcard :(
