18th Century university degrees

My ancestor Roger Challice received his BA from Balliol College Oxford in 1749. He then became the vicar of Mayfield, Sussex, and received his MA from Pembroke College Cambridge in 1762. I understand the MA was awarded without further study or examination, just time in 'the job'. I am puzzled by the MA coming from Cambridge - is there a link between Cambridge and Canterbury, as Mayfield came under the jurisdiction of the Canterbury Diocese?
