Hello,

I know of 3x Robert MALCOLMs who ended up in NZ.

One has a middle name of John and he is from London and not in my tree.
The other two are from Scotland and in my tree.

One b. abt 1794 Paisley, Renfrew married Elizabeth DAVIDSON abt 1820.

I have no idea when they arrived in NZ.

-----

The other b. 1836 Glasgow, Lanark married Agnes MILLER/MILLAR 30 Aug 1860.

They have not been found in 1871 census but first record of a birth in NZ is that of a son James in 1877. Robert was a witness to the marriage of his son James and he signed his name as Robert Porterfield Malcolm.

Birth 1877/2494 Malcolm James - Agnes - Robert

Seems Agnes died in 1922 and Robert in 1924.

I can't find the burials in Christchurch City database.

Nothing early enough in Papers Past.

Regards,

Dave

Leonard - HERE

Thanks gibbo.

Probably. The ones who did go to NZ were in Lanarkshire in the census or 2 census prior.

Just found the cemetery:

Birth 1871/32278 Malcolm Robert Porterfield - Agnes - Robert

Fits age at death. That would explain why they were not in 1871 census in Scotland.

The tree is very selective in that it only shows son James born in 1877 and not Robert born in 1871.

A daughter Mary Robertson born 30 Oct 1860 so Robert and Agnes and family arrived between 1861 census and 1871.

Dave it appears that Janet is the child to Agnes. I found a passenger list for the John Temperley

MALCOLM JANET 3
MALCOLM AGNES 30

Well now. :2fun: Thanks. Age fits so you have found Agnes. Mary R must have died before 1866. I'd better look for a birth for Janet around 1863.

Janet Miller Malcolm

birth: 02 Aug 1862 TRADESTON,GLASGOW,LANARK,SCOTLAND

So, when did Robert arrive?

I can't find enough in early NZ BMD to convince me the other Robert b. 1794 did end up in NZ with spouse Elizabeth.

You've done it again. Thanks. :)

Yes, an older sister Margaret born 17 Sep 1827 who can't be found in census after 1861.

Yes, Robert who married Agnes MILLER is listed as a blacksmith on the birth certificate of son James.

Thanks for looking.

Kinross and carpenter do not fit. My James was still unmarried in 1861 and this one must have married about 1857.

Still got this one to sort parents out:

NZ Marriage 1890/606 Elizabeth Newland - James Malcolm

NZ Death 1925/10352 Malcolm James Porterfield 66Y ** no sign of birth in NZ

I can't see a birth 1859 +/- 3 in Scotland that fits. ???

James Porterfield Malcolm married (first church Dunedin) 1 Jan 1890, spouses maiden name Nicolson.
Alexander Stewart Malcolm son of James Porterfield Malcolm and Elizabeth.
:2fun:

Births Sep 1859
MALCOLM James Porter Field Leicester 7a 188

1861
RG9 Piece 1013 Folio 34 Page 25
Civil Parish: Luton
Registration District: Luton
Sub-RD: Luton
55 London Road
James Malcolm head age 33 occ Baptist minister Wellington St Chapel ? born Scotland
Susanna wife age 31 born Scotland
Jessie dau age 5 born Scotland
Mary E dau age 3 born Bermondsey
James P son age 1 born Leicester
Elizabeth McAll servant

Arrived in NZ ???

The Baptist minister is the son of James and Mary SHEARER. So James P has his great-grandmother's name as his middle name.
