That's under 70 quid for the year - only available before Jan 5th 2016 & you will be charged for a full membership (£120) for the following year unless you cancel the auto renewal process before you get billed next year.

BTW I am NOT advertising Ancestry, it's just that I haven't seen any offers from any of the other companies yet!

And plus VAT so it's £89.00 for the year.

There was 50% off for FMP Black Friday weekend, so I took them up on it :)

I might take that offer up, seems a fair deal.;)

I suppose they had to do something to keep their subscribers, with what appears to be a lot of people leaving Ancestree.

EDIT: I've just checked, and they are offering 3 months free, if signed up for a year. So that's a 25% reduction.

Is that 40% off the Canadian site.?

Just been trying to find it again myself as I deleted the invite e-mail without taking up the offer assuming that is was a general offer, but it may have been targeted at me as a "guest member" with a 900 person family tree on their site.

I do still have an e-mail offering 30% off the USA site. Trouble is these offers can be very specifically targeted & I assumed they were generic. Sorry about that guys.

as you log in, it's advertising 3 months membership free on Ancestry UK, then when you click on it it says £74.17 and VAT £14.83 total £89

What really cheeses me off with A and FMP is that they offer all these free times and cut rates etc but not once have they ever offered the ones who have continuously paid top $$ for their renewal any deals...

You should have received an email about this deal, but if your membership is continuous, perhaps they didn't bother. I don't believe in continuous membership, they have to work a bit harder for my money :D

Yes, you should cancel your subs, just to see what they offer you to stay with them.
You can always sign back up with them at a later date.

Also, even with out paying subs, you can still add your own records to your tree that you find elsewhere, through your own efforts.;)

Reckon that's the catch if you pay for a yearly sub they don't send you any new offers because they know you will renew the annual sub the next year. If you only pay monthly / quarterly etc they want to entice you to stay longer, so more specials will be sent to you.

Rang them today and as you can guess the outcome was...

1st sub site x
last year paid $299.88 world sub
this year renewal price is $449.95

current special for new members only 14 day free trial then $299.88 year world sub [till 31 Jan]

They wouldn't give me the special price, more than happy to lose the lot, then offered 20% off renewal price $359.96

2nd sub site
50% off world sub $99.75

I did sign back up, and got the 30% off. But it's getting that, they don't have what I need, and now I'm thinking, 'I shouldn't have bothered'.

But while I'm there now, I'll hammer it for all it's worth, and then see what they offer in a years time, before I sign up again and see if it's really worth it.

On a side note, I added one name to my tree, with date of birth, marriage.....and everything else regarding this person, including his death and burial, and what I know for fact...........and lo and behold, I get 88 hints for this person, and all totally worthless, except one tree that is totally wrong with no records, and the owner of that tree hasn't been on the site for over 4 years.:eek:

Just a quick update:

The 40% offer appeared again on a log-in so I decided to take it up. £69 inc vat. It includes a rolling renewal at full price, so I have diaried out to cancel it before renewal next January. I shall decide then who to renew with - if anyone.

As others have pointed out, privatisation of records has created a mayhem of duplicated and partial record sets. So when one hits a brick wall with one company you have to try another. Each company prioritises different record sets & progresses at different speeds. Each wants healthy profits & over-hypes what it has.

I just wish the Government had kept the records & contracted out digitising them so that there was a single record source & the profits helped to reduce our tax bill - or fund the NHS & Social Services properly.

Ancestry hints are erratic & I am finding that I keep getting the same stuff re-offered. Also with names repeated in subsequent generations, they fail to distinguish between father, son, nephew & grandson etc.

Other peoples' trees are clearly of very variable quality, some are very useful links to new ancestors, but sometimes the errors are visible just by looking at the hint info, worst are the assumptions that names are always unique! It is easy to be lead down a blind alley. But I am learning!

wow - since I had a grizzle on here about subs.. Ancestry needs to start to look after its long term customers.. sounds like someone has a grizzle about freebies on Findmypast too..

Findmypast has just sent me an email to say that We’re pleased to let you know that as a valued member of Findmypast my next subs will be 10% off and will have free access to 1939 register.. wonder if I posted that on their Facebook site what would happen.. ** and there's this..

Finally, we wanted to let you know we're opening up access to most of our records for free this weekend*, so we'll be adding three extra days onto your current subscription for free. We'll be in touch to let you know when they've been added. - wonder if this will be a 1 off or happen every time they give freebies away..

regards
Val
