On my mother's side of the family is The Murrays from Parramatta Australia. My Grandmother was Mary Kathleen Murray (1892- 1979) married Sidney Graham 1921. Her parents Elijah John Murray and Annie Elizabeth Stowe married 1884. I know a fair bit about her and her siblings as I have many memories, including photos. It is Elijah John that has always been an unknown, as the story I was given is that Murray was not his real name and his mother was Procter (or maybe Proctor). She travelled to Sutton Forest to deliver Elijah John and then took him back to Parramatta. My Great Grandmother always said in a whisper Granny Procter was a street walker. I love that I remember her whispering the family secrets.

Any ideas about where to start etc would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I can help a bit with this one as I have STOWE in my tree.

The Procter/Proctor bit is new to me so I will investigate.

Don't know how this marriage would fit in:

611/1873 PROCTOR WILLIAM WOOLSTONHOUSE - MURRAY ANNE - SYDNEY

Can't find a notice in newspapers.

I wonder what the marriage might have re his parents.

4467/1884 MURRAY ELIJAH JOHN - STOWE ANNIE E - PARRAMATTA ** 8 May 1884

Can't find a notice in newspapers.

The Sydney Morning Herald - Saturday 26 August 1950 p.42
DEATHS
MURRAY Elijah John.-August 22, 1950, at his residence, 60 Phillip Street, Parramatta, dearly loved father of Lily (Mrs. Barlow), Maud (Mrs. Brown), Bessie (Mrs. Buswell), Mollie (Mrs. Graham), and Walter, aged 90 years.

Age at death points to this birth but is it the right one?

5222/1860 JOHNSTONE ELIJAH J - GEORGE - ANN - BERRIMA

Why is there not also a birth reg under the name of MURRAY with no father listed?

No other children to George & Ann JOHNSTON(E) ???

Something is not quite right.

When did Elijah's mother Ann die?

From 1860 to 1892 before they married ??? And no other children ???

And no birth reg for Elijah under MURRAY ???

Can that 1860 Elijah be found as JOHNSON (variation) in later years to rule that birth out?

Thanks Geoff.

That 1887 marriage might be on the other set of films at the Mitchell Library in the city.

The 1860 birth does not fit well at all given there is no corresponding reg as MURRAY and the later marriage as MURRAY.

I can't see PROCTOR/PROCTER for a birth around 1860 or a marriage to a MURRAY.

Will have to search TROVE some more looking for Elijah. One hit only and it's not him.

A death for his mother would be good too.

No Ann/Annie Proctor/Procter marriages either that seem to fit.

Elijah was a bricklayer and searching for 'Elijah Murray' turns up one in the liquor trade. No hits for 'Elijah John Murray' at all.

Thanks Geoff.

1888 was also the year an Elijah Murray was before the Licensing Court.

The Sydney Morning Herald - Friday 10 February 1888 p.4
LICENSING COURTS
Messrs. H. Byrnes, N. Stewart, and J. E. Manning,
L.Ms., presided in the Parramatta Licensing Court yes-
terday. Elijah Murray appeared to show cause why
the liquor found on his premises, the Parramatta
Union Club, should not be confiscated. The
Bench ordered the liquor to be sold, with £3 3s.
professional costs against defendant. The proceeds of
the liquor were ordered to be divided between her Majesty
the Queen and the Police Reward Fund, after the costs
have been satisfied. Notice of appeal was given by Mr.
Levien for defendant.

Thanks Geoff.

Death notice seems normal and Will is explained by the fact that Annie had died.

The Sydney Morning Herald - Wednesday 28 February 1940 p.12
DEATHS
MURRAY.-February 26, 1940, at her residence, 60 Phillip Street, Parramatta, Annie Elizabeth Murray, loved wife of E. J. Murray and dear mother of Lily, Maud, Bessie, Mollie, Walter, and Kenneth, aged 74 years.

So don't know what to make of the addresses in the rolls.
