Hello

I am completely stumped by one of my ancestors and am struggling to find records for him - I wonder if anyone can help?

William Tappenden b 1842/3 (from death certificate and age on 1871, 1891 and 1901 census). All the family I have found so far are from the Hackney area.

William was married twice and both certificates show Thomas Tappenden as his father with the occupation of Plasterer. Marriages are firstly in 1868 to Sarah Harper (b 1847, Hackney - d 1872) and they had one child, Elizabeth (b 1869, Hackney).

Second marriage was to Eliza Wood nee Farey (b 1843, Homerton, Hackney) and they had 4 children I am aware of (Florence - 1868, William G - 1874, Edith - 1876 and Henry - 1880, all born in Homerton, Hackney)and one from Eliza's first marriage (Florence Wood).

I cannot find William (having a father named Thomas) on the 1851 or 1861 census or a record of his birth. The only William Tappenden that fits the birth years was born in Kent and I believe his parents were William and Susannah.

William died in 1895 in Hackney Union Infirmary.

Any help anyone can give or alternate theories would be gratefully received.

Many thanks,
Katie

Hi Katie

I have just found a William Tappenden
1842 Jan - Mar William Elham 5 161

I am sure this is Eltham

There are quite a few in E. Ashford

Another one is
1844 Jan -Mar William Isle of Sheppey 5 472

I hope this first one is correct

Hi Katie,

In 1851 there is a Thomas Tappenden age 32 born Canterbury/Kent occ plasterer living in the civil parish of Shoreditch one of the children is a William aged 5 born Bookerhand (looks like Birkenhead Cheshire).

Also on the 1871 census living living at the same abode as William but listed as a seperate household is a Thomas Tappenden age 30 occ plasterer. He could possibily be Williams brother as there is a Thomas Tappenden with William and family in 1851 born abt 1841 Kingston/surrey.
