All very confusing :-( It's not proving very easy to
piece together. I'm in a bit of a muddle with all the surnames - Holborn, Brown, Law, Cox!

Thanks again.

Hi
I think I would send for Jack's birth certificate to see what is on it.
Jack Law j/m 1922 Doncaster ref 9c 1581
I wonder if Thomas was not Simon's child, but to save face he was given the name Law. Simon refused to be named as the father, so only Ada's was named as mother, using her maiden name. This assumes Ada had not been married before. Simon could have been away in the Army at the time Thomas was conceived.

Will do Dave, I'll see what Jack's certificate says.

That might explain why my grandfather had the same name as the Thomas Edward Cox named in the Barnardo's information?

Hi Amy
let us know how you get on. If Jacks cert is the same as Thomas's, it may help to get one of the others, ie Lily Law j/s 1915 vol 9c page 1488 who was born in Rotherham. I know it's expense, it may be the only way of confirming things

Hi,

I've ordered both Jack's and Lily's birth certificates, I had the same idea too that it would be interesting to see both and see whether it sheds any more light on the whole thing.

Will definitely keep you posted, just got to wait in suspense now for a couple of weeks!

Thanks again,

Amy

Hi Dave,

Just to update you, I received both birth certificates at the weekend. Lily's birth certificate names the father as Sidney T Law and Jack's has no father mentioned so it looks like your theory is correct.

Do you have any suggestions as to where to go from here? I still feel like there are so many questions unanswered! Where did this Sidney T Law go? Is the Thomas Cox mentioned in the Barnardo's report my great grandfather? I can't seem to find him on a census. Too many questions going round in my head!!

Thanks again for your advice.

Hi,

I'd be really grateful if anyone could help me with my family tree which I've been researching on and off for several years and keep hitting dead ends.

My grandfather Thomas Edward Law born 1920 in Mexborough was put into a Barnardo's home when he was about 4 with his younger brother Jack.

I requested my grandfather's birth certificate and his mother is named as Ada Brown working as a domestic servant. No father is given on the birth certificate.

I requested information from Barnardo's about the circumstances surrounding my grandfather's admittance and the paperwork that came back showed that after several warnings the children were taken into care because of neglect. It says they were first put into a workhouse - Doncaster/Sheffield? It also emerged that Ada Brown was living with a man named Thomas Cox and three other children - Joseph, Lily and Dorothy. Dorothy had died in the workhouse.

I've struggled finding any of them on censuses and I'm confused as to why the children have the surname Law. Could she have been married before meeting Thomas Cox? But why does her surname appear as Brown on my grandfather's certificate?

I'd really appreciate any help anyone can offer with this? I'd just like to put all the missing pieces together to know what happened to my grandfather's family.

Thank you!

Hi,

There is another Eva Holborn born abt 1900 Durham but living in Worsborough Yorkshire West Riding in 1911, hmm she could be the Eva who married in 1921. 1911 has a George Schofield born at 1900 living in the sub district of Worsborough, but then again there is one born Doncaster abt 1882 plus many others of that name.

little confused... are we looking for a Thomas Edward Law or Willie Reeve Ingham...

this is all possibles - posting anyway..
A possible...There is a marriage for a Ada Brown to Sidney T Laws April qtr 1912 Rotherham (which is 8km from Mexborough)

Could this be a possible for Ada’s death – Jan qtr 1928 Dewsbury - age 35

a Ada Brown charged at Sheffield for stealing a watch in 1905 – age 17 – a domestic received 21 days HMP Wakefield – discharged 31 May 1905

a Sidney Laws also did time in HMP Wakefield – 5 Dec 1910 age 28 b Alston a grocer for bastardy arrears.. I take that as not paying maintenance….discharged 4 Feb 1911

a Lily Law born July qtr 1915 Rotherham – mm Brown – married George W Reynolds March qtr Lewisham 1d page 1250 – died Oct 1998 Lewisham age 83

was he born 26 May 1916 Mexborough?
Hi, yes we’ll he was born April 1916, to Albert ingham and Ada Hallam, his mother died when he was 5 don’t know what happened to his father but his mother was married to a mr cox, mr cox then got with Ada law I think, or brown not sure, anyway he was sent to Doncaster workhouse with the other kids 5gat was Ada browns or law, very confusing as they were sent to prison for neglect, my grandad Willie was then brought up in Barbados homes until the age of 21, sorry for the spelling mistakes, I’ll have to forward the information I have from Barbados, I just thought there’s too much of a coincidence when I read on here about about lily, Dorothy, and jack, those were the children he lived with but there’s no mention of my grandad, many thanks for replying.

Ada Ingham married Thomas E Cox Sept qtr 1918 Doncaster - if it's her she should show as widow on certificate – her husband Albert Ingham died in Dec qtr 1914 -age 40yrs – Doncaster

Albert Ingham married Ada Hallam April 1897 Rotherham – they had 6 children listed on 1911 census at 23 Kirby St Mexborough

so wonder what happened to them too…
Albert Ingham Hallam b 1896 - died Oct 1917 Doncaster age 21
Arthur b 1899
John Edward b 1901
Harry b 1904
Annie b 1908
Sidney b 1910

Is this her death?
Ada Cox age 42 Jan qtr 1920 Doncaster – Vol 9c page 942 – do you have this one?
regards
Val
