On the 1911 Census of 35, (what looks like) Herrick Road, Islington, there is:
Harold Arber "add son"

Other 3 folk on there are named "Nethercote". I do not as yet know a connection between the Harold Arber I research and the name Nethercote. Would "add son" mean adopted, in which case would the original surname be retained? He is the right age for the one I seek, who was born in 1902 at Highbury.

I presume this is the Harold to whom you refer

baptism
Harold William Arber
2 Jul 1902
father, Henry Norman Arbert,
mother, Maria Jane Arbert

27 Canning Road
Highbury Park St John Islington
Correct Dave. Back on his trail again! :D His siblings and ancestors are reasonably straight forward to find basic details on. But Harry remains the mystery man. I have a photo of him aged about 16yr with his mother and siblings, which is why I thought adoption unlikely? But am puzzled by "add son"?

I am sure Add means adopted. Bear in mind formal adoption was for the rich, so it could be that the Nethercotes were relations, but I can't find the link. However the Nethercotes lived at 27 Canning Road in 1901, the address where Harold William was born. Life must have been hard for Henry and Jane as they had 7 children in 1911 all under 10, the youngest 2 being twins, so perhaps Norman lived with another family in his first few years until his parents got on their feet,
The Nethercotes follow the same naming pattern. Mary is with her sons William and Harold in 1882 but without a husband, and is a widow thereafter

Thank you Dave. Excellent information. I did not know the Nethercotes lived in Canning Road.

I actually have a fair bit of info on the twins. But Harry disappears until1927 when he got married. Disappears again until 1947. Next thing I have is him working for Royal Mail and his death in 1954.
