I looked for him on the 1911 Census but the only family I can find living at 35 Herrick Road is a family called Morris. What other details do you have for him?

Finally found him, the name had been transcribed as Anber and he was living at 5 Herrick Road, not 35.

After all that I have no idea what "add son" means unles it should be grandson. That would fit with the ages of the other members of the household.

In 1911 Harold's parents Henry Norman & Jane Arber are about one and a half miles away with six children aged 11, 10, 7, 5 and twins of 2. Looks like seven children under the age of 12 was just too much and Harold has been informally adopted by a family friend/relative to reduce the burden on his mother and be company for the widow who took him in, her own two sons being grown up.

He would keep his own name as he was still part of that family, just being looked after by Mary Nethercote.

Certainly possible Elaine.
I have a photo of him with his siblings, except Henry Norman Arber jnr, when he was about 14yrs. I guess sent to both Henry Norman Arbers as they were in France in the Royal Field Artillery.
I think (only guess work) he must have disliked it when they came home as he joined a circus according to hear/say from several people and by 1920 was in the Merchant Navy.
