I found an old small and battered family bible at the carboot today. I had to buy it ,,,,guess im a real family history saddo
The bible has the usual names and dates written inside it,,,and when i saw the old faded ink,,and the way it had been obviously handed down the family,,,i had to spend the 50p the lady wanted for it,just so i could research it !
The bible was first presented to a Annie E Langtry in 1878 on her 15th birthday,,,and so i am now just going to start having a look at who this girl was,,,how the other names in the bible are related to her,,,and maybe try and see if there is a descendant i can trace who would want it. I know that if it was mine,i would be fascinated to see it,,to look at the handwriting,and to see my ancestors names as written by my great great grandparents maybe? The bible was last handed on in 1935 to George Ernest Day from his mother,,,,cant wait to piece together the connection between Annie Langtry and George ,,,keeps me busy at work if nothing else:biggrin:

might need a bit of help with this one,,,i have found Annie in 1881 census in Salford with her parents George b 1836 Macclesfield a police sergeant,,and mother Ellen b1843 Manchester.
I have other names in the bible

george william kirkbride b 1885
Albert kirkbride b 1887
Annie kirkbride b 1889
Ellen kirkbride b 1891

the bible was passed on to Annie Kirkbride in 1900 from "her mother"
it was passed on again in 1935 to George Ernest Day from "his mother"

George E Day was b1912 in Salford,,,mothers maiden name Kirkbride

in the 1891 census 53,clifton street Salford we have the Kirkbride family,,,the parents are

George W Kirkbride b1861 and Annie E Kirkbride b 1864

my assumption was the bible was passed to Annie E Langtry b1864,,,she is the Annie E Kirkbride b1864 ,,she passed it on to her daughter,,Annie Kirkbride b 1890....and that this Annie is George Days Father?
But i cant see a marriage for an Annie e Langtry to a George w kirkbride....
Can i have some help sorting this out people?

Annie E Kirkbride b 1890 did marry a James E Day in Salford in 1911,,,so we are on the right track

Just checked the 1911 census,,,,,George W Kirkbride and Annie E Kirkbride had been married 27 years,,,there is a marriage in 1883 between George Walker Kilbride and Annie Eliza Bates ,,,,so was Annie E Langtry married before to a BATES? onwards.................:biggrin:

Cant find a birth for Annie/Ann E Langtry???? the bible says
"presented to Annie E Langtry September 30th 1878 on her 15th birthday."

George Langtry married Ellen Bates in 1866 in Manchester,,,so Annie E Bates was Ellens illigitimate daughter !!!
These things are never easy are they ? :2fun:

So,,,,,the bible was presented to Annie E Langtry {AKA Annie E Bates} in 1878 on her 15th birthday,,it was dedicated
"As a token of his love and esteem on her 15th birthday" probably from her stepfather George.
Annie married George Walker Kirkbride in 1883,,,then in 1900 passed the bible on to her daughter Annie Eliza Kirkbride.
Annie Eliza Kirkbride married James E Day in 1911,,,then passed the bible on to her son George Ernest Day {b1912} in 1935.

A most enjoyable hunt,,,now to trawl genes reunited,,,see if anyones interested in this family !!! :biggrin:

Cheers folks,,,i have found a member on genes reunited who has an interest in the Kirkbride and Day family,,,i have sent him a message....lets see what happens,,,i might get this bible back to its family after all !!

Interesting when its like this, family out there who probably didnt know the bible even excisted. Lets hope it holds interest to them it would be good to have in back with the family.

Well done GB, I am doing the same thing with a named ww2 war medal.
I bought it as a replacement, and found it was named, so it's not suitable.
But I will keep it safely,until I find a new owner.

I bought an old postcard and couldn't rest till I had worked out why the person on the card was saying to the person who it was addressed to. I know you know this view. Eventually traced them as born on a farm near the view.

Its almost automatic these days. Not sure if its being nosey or the thrill of the puzzle. I think it is probably the latter because I'm not generally nosey. I don't even read the gossip columns.

hi,,with the help of another family historian,,we have figured out that there are probably a few descendants still out there,,,,i have sent some messages on genes reunited to 3 members who had an interest in some of the names mentioned,,,but no replies as yet.
