Thanks Ellie.

Thanks Barbara.

The first letter is a bit of a problem.

I don't think it's a B looking at other others on the page. With the thick stroke it looks like other Ms on the page. But searching Maler/Males/Malen gets no hit.

There was a hamlet of Ash.

it is difficult and there is a Bales Ash campsite but in North Devon. Think you need local knowledge here Dave. I can't find a map detailed enough.

"MALBOROUGH is a small village, on an eminence, partly in West Alvington parish, about two miles from Salcombe Haven, and four miles S.S.W. of Kingsbridge. Its parish contains 1951 inhabitants, and 4890 acres of land, bounded on the south by the English channel, between Bolt head and Tail, and including the small hamlets of Coombe, Collaton, Rew, Bolbury, Batson, and Shadycombe; and the small town, sea-port, fishing station, and chapelry of SALCOMBE

Lots of sites mention the hamlet of Ash but that is all.

Stoke Fleming is a village and parish in South Devon, lying within the district of South Hams. The village occupies a clifftop position on the shores of Start Bay, about three miles from the historic port of Dartmouth. The parish, 3,200 acres (1,280 hectares) in area, runs north from the sea for five kilometres, and is three-and-a half kilometres from east to west. The area outside the village is rural – with the hamlets of Ash, Bugford, Bowden, Embridge and Venn nestled in the folds of rolling farmland.
