I hope someone can help!!!
I have just discovered my maternal gt grandmother was apparently adopted!
She turned up on the doorstep of the people that raised her after I believe her mother died!!
Her name was Edith Maud Thomas born Barnstaple area c1878.
My cousin said her father's name was John Thomas we now don't know if he was her adoptive father or her real father.
Whether or not she was legally adopted?
and of course the possibility she was illegitimate!
Can anyone help at all of where I could start I have sent for her marriage cert will I know from that if she was adopted??
Regards Kim

Hopefully the marriage certificate will give her fathers name as it seems that she was registered with his surname assuming this is the one and Jane Huxtable is her mother. Couldnt find a death for a Jane Huxtable plenty with the middle name of Jane so she could be one of them she may have been entered with her 2nd name 1st.

Hello Kim,

You may have problems with that adoption as legal adoption wasn't introduced into the United Kingdom until the first half of the twentieth century. Earlier records of private arrangements can be very difficult to trace.
