Hello everyone,

Ive just discovered this site and am hoping there maybe someone on here who can help me.

I have an ancestor (my g.g grandmother) who Iam desperately trying to find more about. She was admitted to St John's Hospital in Stone, near Aylesbury Buckinghamshire, in 1920 and remained there until she died in 1945. It was also known as Stone Lunatic Asylum. I would really like to trace her records from this time but have had no luck so far and wondered if anyone knows where or how I could trace them? Ive tried the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies who could confirm her admission and time there but nothing else, and also The Health and Social Care Information Centre who said that NHS records did not begin until 1948 and so they have no records either.

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know, this has been puzzling me for several years and I really want to get some answers at last! Thank you for your time, Alice :)

Hi, try any local history societies for that area and librarys also have a word with the local museum . some of the local groups preserve records like these. you may be lucky . could also put an advertisment in a local newspaper for the area as well. we have a memory lane page in our local paper and loads of stuff comes up. good luck sue

Hi Alice

welcome to the Forum

I have had to try and obtain my sister in law's medical records for my niece.

I found out that they keep medical records for 20 years from death and are held by the local Healthcare Trust. After that they are I believe destroyed.
I think that the likelyhood of you being able to access them is zilch !

I hope that for your sake someone could tell us that this is not so, but having done this recently, I think it could be true.

Maddie

nainmaddie - oh nooo! I hope this is not the case :( however it does seem possible.

leefer - I just followed your link and read the report - fascinating stuff! This has given me hope that perhaps my g.g grandmothers notes may be lurking somewhere. I really want to find out why she was there and whether several family rumours are true or not so I will persevere... Thankyou for sharing it.
