Thanks Woody.

It's probably Lowr with the r raised, whatever the correct term is. :)

You are probably right about it being Shull.. not Sk... because the 'k' is usually written even if not the first letter as 'K' I've noticed a lot.

It must be this: Torthorwald and we have a little problem:

Agnes Wright
birth: 14 September 1816
christening: 15 September 1816 Torthorwald, Dumfries
father: David Wright
mother: Margaret Rutherford

Oops - just saw the town/village name - back to thinking caps!

No problem Woody - I know of genuki :)

I now wonder if the informant knew the right parents.

Not much yet.

There is a Peter:

Mary Wright
christening: 7 January 1810 Torthorwald, Dumfries
father: Peter Wright

William born in Largs - parents James & Mary

William MALCOLM & Agness WRIGHT
23 May 1840 Largs, Ayr

Married 1st William Malcolm - joiner journeyman fits and James a free stone quarrier also fits. Is there another marriage in Dumfries? Can't see one.

Besides Mary:

Hannah Wright
birth: 25 September 1806
christening: 28 September 1806 Torthorwald, Dumfries
father: Peter Wright

John Wright
birth: 22 January 1808
christening: 24 January 1808 Torthorwald, Dumfries
father: Peter Wright
mother: Betty Celant

Could it be different Agnes Malcolms and the Largs birth/marriage in hometown was correct after all?

Ignore that - I forgot the death cert info/confirmation.

I have a death cert where an informant has given assumed parents due to a generation gap and been proved wrong so yes, I agree that's a possibility as you thought re informant's info

There is a Peter after all and a Betty so perhaps the remaining puzzle is Shullow/Celant

Not many Wright baptisms in Torthorwald.

However no female Wright baptisms in Dumfries 1811 - 1820 with father = Peter

The only Peter Wright marriage I can find in Dumfries 1795 - 1825:

Peter Wright
marriage: 1817 Applegarth, Dumfries
spouse: Betty Smith

Marriages of Peter Wright 1790 - 1810 PMd you - no help at all!

Catch you later - day begun without me here! Hope your night sky isn't lit up and bush fire problems have subsided.

Thanks Woody. :)

Three more days at least for parts of NSW to worry about the weather fanning the fires.
