Dear Family History UK

Our ancestor Albert Edward Court born 1876 Lambeth was a private secretary in the 1901 census and Chief Of Staff at the London Collesium in 1905 (occupation recorded on his son's Edward Leslie Court's birth certificate).

Is there any way of tracing who Albert was private secretary to?

Is there any way of tracing Albert's work at the London Collesium?

Thank you for your help

Hi Mike and Geoff - thank you for your posts.

Albert Edward Court and his wife Ruby Court (Ruth Jezard/Ruth Thrasher) are living in Lillie Road, Dorset Mansions in the 1901 census, close by to The Empress Theatre. We have only just discovered through using The Stage online archive that Ruth Jezard was an actress and played at The Royal Drury Lane Theatre in 1899 just before her marriage to Albert Edward in 1900. Ruth's sister Louisa Thrasher who marries Percy Atkins in 1905 is also found in The Stage archive as a Theatrical Business Manager. We are going to subscribe to The Stage to look for other relatives. Ruth's and Louisa's sister (Grace) Alice Maud Mary Thrasher/Jezard/Courtenay/Solomon has an illegitimate son Horace Thrasher/Thresher/Courtenay in 1893 and the family rumour is he is the son of an aristocrat - with illegitimacy it is who is the father but also how did they meet - did (Grace) Alice go to the theatre and meet the father there or was she also an actress.

Would Ruth/Ruby have been playing at The Empress Theatre and Albert Edward a private secretary there?

Thank you.

Hi Geoff - sorry, didn't spot Robert Jezard, so here is explanation.

Priscilla Pope marries Robert Thrasher
Have not been able to find marriage

Family
Robert Thrasher
Priscilla Thrasher
Eliza Thrasher
Alice Maud Mary Thrasher (later uses Grace Alice Maud Mary Courtenay)
Louisa Thrasher
Ruth Thrasher (later uses Ruby and Jezard)

Robert Thrasher dies in 1879 very close to the birth of his daughter Ruth Thrasher. On Priscilla's death certificate in 1900 she is called the widow of John Jezard - although we have not been able to find the marriage for Priscilla and John. John Jezard is called a hanson cab conductor.

It seems that on Ruth/Ruby's wedding certificate she is remembering both her father who she would not remember and her step-father out of respect to both of them - Robert Jezard - Robert Thrasher and John Jezard - or her true parentage was in doubt?

Robert Thrasher in the 1871 census is a messenger.

When Robert's daughter (Grace) Alice marries Herbert Solomon in 1901 she calls her father Robert Courtenay a cab proprietor.

We are waiting for:
Robert Thrasher's death certificate
Louisa Thrasher's wedding certificate
Louisa Thrasher's birth certificate
(Grace) Alice Thrasher's birth certificate
Ruth Thrasher's birth certificate
Eliza Thrasher's birth certificate
to see what Robert Thrasher's profession(s) will be

In 1881 despite her father Robert Thrasher dying in 1879 the family is rich enough to send daughter Louisa Thrasher to boarding school.

It has been suggested that Robert could be a Queens Messenger or some other Civil Service Messenger or a London Stock Exchange Messenger as the family later become stockbrokers at the London Stock Exchange but that is not for another forty years - messenger in 1871 and stock exchange clerks in 1911. If Robert Thrasher was a Queens Messenger he would have been a retired Army Officer and could have been abroad when he and Priscilla married as we can also not trace him on the 1861, 1851 and 1841 census.

Any thoughts gratefully received!

Hi Lorraine

I've looked quite extensively through your posts and available online records. One thing common with a number of the men is that they appear to involved in the stock exchange, either as clerks, brokers or similar.

It would certainly be very interesting to see the results of the certificates you are waiting for, assuming they are available.

Going back to Priscilla (May) do you have any theories on the involvement of George, Priscilla, May, Violet, Horace and 133 Finborough Road? Sorry it is out of context in this post.

Hi Geoff

The men in the family Percy Atkins, Albert Edward Court and Herbert Lewis Solomon are private secretaries, involved with theatre (not Herbert we think although we have found his siblings going bankrupt as show card manufacturers - checking out what a show card is although it does sound obvious!!) and stockbrokers at the same time - so they are a close family - we have found the families living in the same three streets in Fulham and Kensington at the same time and working together at the same time.

I have seen Private Secretary in theatrical programmes, so possibly Percy and Albert were theatrical private secretaries before moving onto other theatrical professions - but I expect there are other types of private secretary.

Priscilla May Thrasher was married to Robert Thrasher
Priscilla May Thrasher then married John Jezard (although no marriage can be found). Priscilla is still Thrasher in 1891 census and living with her daughters. She is listed as Priscilla Jezard in the 1894 electoral roll onwards until her death in 1900, so it was a very short marriage.

George Jezard could be a son of Priscilla and Robert (and then George taken on John Jezard's name as their daughter Ruth Thrasher did using Ruth Jezard - but have not found George in any censuses living with the Thrasher family). Please see below a George Thrasher on the 1881 census and 1891 census. However, this George Thrasher may not be the son of Priscilla Thrasher and Robert Thrasher. In the 1891 census there is an Ellen Browne with George Thrasher (if this is our George Thrasher/Jezard and our Ellen Browne (Jezard) - George could have introduced Ellen to his family to marry another male Jezard relative - but have still not been able to find any other records linking them, so this may be off the beaten track and to be discounted as co-incidence?

Not being able to find Priscilla Thrasher (Pope's) marriage to John Jezard or other details about John Jezard (had he been married before and George Jezard is his son and Priscilla's step-son?), we don't know the relationships with George Jezard and May Jezard at the moment (they could even be 'made up' parents for Violet - hopefully will know when Violet's birth certificate arrives).

Horace Thrasher/Thresher is almost certainly Horace Courtenay (Kensington Register Office also believe them to be the same baby). Priscilla May Jezard had been married to Robert Thrasher. The birth 'parents' for Horace Thresher are Percy Thresher/Thrasher (real name Atkins) and Louisa Thrasher (Priscilla and Robert's daughter). The mother of Horace Courtenay is (Grace) Alice Maud Mary Courtenay (Thrasher/Jezard) (married name Solomon) - (Grace) Alice is Louisa's sister.

I hope this helps!! And thank you for your determination - Sherlock would be proud!
