Albert Edward MILES

#1
Hello
I am new to Family History research. What I know of how to go about it fits on the head of a match, so I am navigating my way around pretty much feebly. I have a detectives mind for piecing things together, so that may be of some help. I am in Australia 2nd Generation of English ;Miles Irish; Partlon, Murphy, ?Greenwood.

So far I have found that his Father my PGGF had the same initials as my PGF.

Albert E:( MILES Born ? d 1912 Barrow
He Married Eve/Eva MILES (nee Frost) in 1897 b? d 1915 Barrow

They had 5 children

James MILES b 1898 d 1898 Barrow in Furness, Lancashire

Elsie MILES b 1899 Barrow, family believe she died enroute to Australia in New York Harbour? While emigrating with her brothers, and cousins

Albert Edward MILES b 1905 Barrow d 1984 Perth, Aust. He was my PGF he emigrated to Sydney Australia in abt 1924, he was brought to Australia by a relative Samuel Cooper, Engineer from Lancahire, and his wife Marie Cooper.

Frank MILES b 1907 Barrow Emigrated to Australia poss 1926. D 1966 Perth Aust.

Tom King MILES b 1912 d 1913 Barrow.

I'm not sure if the names of the family farms Albert and Frank created in Australia are of any clue? Clevellys and Southend.

I'm not sure how to find addresses, or any further information, all suggestions welcomed. I look forward to interacting on this site.

Happy New Year for 2012.
Cheers

Hi Angela, and welcome to FHUK.

Not sure how many questions there are in your first posting.:2fun:

But hopefully you can split them down, and ask away in the most appropriate forum.:)

I'm sure we can help you along your way. Helpful bunch of folk here.

Good luck with your research.

Births Mar 1874
FROST Eva - Ulverston 8e 786
Frost Eve - Ulverston 8e 786

That is curious - the 1911 census says born 1869 in Barrow in Furness and up to 1 July 1876 that would be Ulverston Registration District. I can't find the birth reg for Albert. Age at death says 1870.

Deaths Mar 1912
Miles Albert 42 Barrow F. 8e 1197

Deaths Mar 1915
Miles Eva 40 Barrow F. 8e 1296

Oh wow, you guys are amazing! I cannot believe the effort you have made to find this information.
I had found the Coorow Waddy database as that is where I grew up in the 70's, on one of those farms!

It was an amazing life.
It was actually looking at that Database, side by side with my Dad, now 72 on the day after Boxing Day, that fuelled my motivation to look up our family.

The one we have lost that has been mentioned is Elsie. She apparently came to Australia, but Grannie, AE Miles 1905 wife told me in 1990 after Grandad had died that he had a sister that drowned or died on the way to Australia she fell off the boat or was drowned. But I can find no record of Elsie's death.
Gt Uncle Frank apparently also spoke of her but Albert never did.

I have also intersected information about the Greenwood side of the family too, from that database, which when I get some more time, I will look up too.

THe bit that amazes me most, is that in the last 5 generations only 1 has missed naming a son with the name "Albert". Despite me even knowing the lineage, 4yo sons middle name by fluke carries this tradition, was with deference to his PGF and his GPGF.

I thank each and every one of you this is amazing.

I need to get a piece of paper big enough to put this family tree on, to help me make sense of it.

I am so in awe of you all thank you so much.

Hi
I see on the record the dep date was 11 march. It looks as if Albert was an assistant Engineer, travelling with Sam Cooper 37 Engineer, his wife Maria Cooper 34 and children Alfred 12, Muriel 4. as Albert's last address was a ditto of Sams. They last lived at Hydro Garage, Cleveleys, Blackpool

Angela do you know what ship Elsie was on?

If you can find out what ship and obtain a copy of the passenger list they usually state if a particular passenger died during the trip.

Hello again
Thanks Gibbo Dave x 2 and Barb

I had discovered Albert Edward Miles whose DOB changes between 1905 /6/7 in different records. AEMiles Departure from London to Sydney 1924, my Dad seems to think it was the same ship. But i think I have found his brother Frank Miles 1907 came out in 1926. Sam Cooper was apparently a relative, as the Miles' Elsie, Albert and Frank were orphaned by 1915.

It also fits where they lived at Cleveleys, because AE Miles 1905 named his farm "Cleveleys" at Waddy Forest, in Western Australia.

On an aside on looking up Australian Archives there was a lad Albert Edward Miles Regimental Number 1966, (his Reg No, Ironically same year I was born).

He also was born Barrow, Lancs, C of E.
He named his Father as Fred Miles at Kembla Heights, Wollongong, New South Wales on Enlistment papers.

His enlisted age was 18 and 8 months in 1915, I would find it difficult to believe my PGF AE MILES 1905 at ten years old to pass himself off as an 18yo.

The Enlisted man's place of employment had been 2 years at the Barrow Haematite Steel Coy. His occupation was Wheeler (of barrows?).

He was Medically discharged from active service in 1918 without disability.

Perhaps there are two AE Miles of similar age.
This I thought it was probably Albert (Hiles) Miles B abt 1869
son of Eliza and James HILES/ MILES B abt 1823.
But that would make him 46 on enlisting,
so I am speculating there is an Albert Edward Miles, son of Frederick sibling of AEMiles Snr GPGF on reflection.

Hmmm back to the start.

Every find creates more questions, it's great.

I'm not sure where the Humphries bit came in though, its all wonderment, exciting and new to me so anything is possible.

Thankyou all who are helping it's fantastic, thanks
