Hello,

Alexander COBBAN c. 27 Feb 1824 St Fergus, Banff, Scotland
- parents George COBBAN & Anne KELMAN

George COBBAN, wheelwright, transported to NSW for 14 years per 'John Barry' in 1839.

Title: George Cobban, one of 320 convicts transported on the John Barry, 12 November 1838.
Details: Sentence details: Convicted at Aberdeen Court of Justiciary for a term of 14 years.
Vessel: John Barry.
Date of Departure: 12 November 1838.
Place of Arrival: New South Wales.

Ann and four children (Mary, William, Alexander & Ann) came free per 'Queen Victoria' in 1839. ??

Should that be 1841? Alexander's future spouse Julia CLIFTON was on board the 'Queen Victoria' in 1841 with her family.

Family Name Given Name(s) Title Rank Ship of Departure Date of Departure Port of Departure Where Bound Ship to Colony Status Remarks References
Cobban Alexander Passenger 'David Watson' 13 Jan 1850 Launceston Sydney 'David Watson' Free POL220/1/1 p183
Cobban Julia Passenger 'David Watson' 13 Jan 1850 Launceston Sydney 'David Watson' Free POL220/1/1 p183

Alexander and Julia should appear in NSW from 1850 but I can't find any trace so far. When and where did they both die? There are several variations of the name including COBHAM, COBAN.

Deaths
5183/1864 COBBAN GEORGE GEORGE ELIZABETH PARRAMATTA
8991/1875 COBBON ANN JOHN K DIED PARRAMATTA PARRAMATTA

Regards,

Dave

Quite curious.

Two different trees have the COBBAN and the CLIFTON families not arriving in 1841 as they clearly did.
A note re Julia's parents:

Henry Clifton was a farm servant in 1837 at Camden. He and Ann Sarah Taylor arrived in 1837 engaged to work for the Hassall family.

I have a connection to the HASSALL family. We had mention of them by the guide on the trip to Camden/Cobbitty and on the recent trip to Picton.

Hello cp,

Thank you very much.

The middle name Kelman is correct, ref post #1.

Birth for Henry George abt 1855?

Only record in Tasmania is for a son baptised in Hobart in 1848.

Regards,

Dave

Hello cp,

Thanks again. Yes, I am trying to get my head around that. Mother is Sarah Ann TAYLOR and Julia's baptism record has her mother as Sarah.

c. 11 Sep 1825 Crowhurst, Sussex, England
Henry & Sarah
Batch: C040912

The death notice says age 80. And William is Julia's father's father. I don't know William's spouse.

Why did I check COBBAN, COBAN, COBBIN, COBIN but not COBHAM ?

Given Name Alexander
Surname Cobham
Alternative Name
Title
File number 54/215
Death Date 24 Nov 1893
Death Date notes
Grant Date 3 Apr 1894
Grant Date notes
Nature of Grant P
General Notes
Occupation Civil Svt
Residence Middle Park

I've not downloaded the digital copies yet.

Regards,

Dave

Hello cp,

Thank you very much.

Age at death fits. Seems the family adopted the variation COBHAM around 1873. The death registrations for example.

I've been looking in the Govt Gazette.

Dave

Hello cp,

The Sydney Morning Herald - Thursday 2 October 1851 p.2
LOSS OF THE BEAVER. We regret to report the loss of this fine schooner (Cobban, master) which was totally lost on the 23rd ultimo, on one of the Solitary Islands, between Smoky Cape and the Clarence River. She was on her passage from Sydney to Moreton Bay, and went ashore in a calm. The crew were all saved, and H.M.S Bramble took them off the island a few days afterwards, and put them on board the schooner Clara, which arrived in Broken Bay on Tuesday. The men walked thence over-land to Sydney, and arrived here yesterday morning. The Beaver was the property of Captain Wiseman, who is now in Europe. She was uninsured.

Ah. This fits I think. Hardly as he would be 3 years old.

Alexander Cobham born approx 1848 Sydney NSW. Was a mariner, but not coastguard as far as I know. I'm searching for more details about his parents etc. His middle name was Clifton.
There is no Alexander Clifton on the list of births so he must be the son born in Hobart in 1848.

Regards,

Dave

Hello cp,

Ok, thanks. He must be the one born in Hobart.

I'm not going to trace all the children. Was just really trying to find a death for Julia, one of the CLIFTON loose ends in my tree.

Dave

Hello cp,

I still think he must be the one born in Hobart. They didn't reach the mainland until 1850.

Where to next in my tree? ;)

Dave
