Hi

Alexander [wid'r] married Eleanor Johnson in March, Cambridgeshire in 1801.

If I have the correct couple they were in Soham, Cambridgeshire by 1804 [possibly 1803 birth of son, William], birth of son, James 1804.

I have wondered for some time if the Rankin line originated in Scotland or Ireland

Looking for any info on Alexander & Eleanor.

Many thanks
Geoff

There are dozens of Alexander Rankins born in Scotland so good luck with the search.

I did however come across this

Alexander Rankin aged 78 born 1760 buried Soham 2nd Dec 1838.

The only Alexander I could find born around that time was baptised 1762 in Gamrie, Banffshire to William Rankin and Anne Reid.

There are probably more out there, that baptism was the first I found.

Pity he died before the 1841 Census which may well have confirmed Scottish roots.

Alexander and Eleanor married by Licence and the trascription of the Licence reads

Alexander Rankin
Widowed
Licence Date 7th April 1801
Ellenor Johnson
Parish W Walton Norfolk
Place March
Ely Diocese Cambridgeshire

Doesn't tell you anything you didn't know already but may be of interest.

Had a quick look on FreeREG and there are about 6 Alexander Rankins born Scotland between 1758 and 1762 - probably the tip of the iceberg!

Thanks, EM'.. Yeah, not going to be easy if b. Scotland, I did take a quick look at possibles, like you I found too many.

As you say, pity he died before 1841, would have been a bonus if after :(

Thanks, Amanda..

Yep, can't discount anything until proved in this 'game'.

I remember a year or two back, the late, Dave L and I found a remote link in our ancestors, so not out of the question :)

As Alexander Rankin was a widower ,I would search the places you know of for earlier born Rankin issue with father Alexander. Have you his occupation
which would help you in the search.
