Death of son has father's name as Alfred Ernest and marriage says he was the son of Thomas, so in that regard the 1940 death fits.

There does not seem to be another death for an Alfred Ernest with father = Thomas.

No sign of a marriage in NSW 1930 - 1940 to an Elizabeth ???

I didn't have the Golden Wedding notice.

The 'husband of Elizabeth' is the bit that has to be sorted to rule that Alfred in or out.

That would fit only if son Alfred was known as William by his father. Death notice has 'father of William' in SMH 1940.

He used the name he was given at birth and he didn't swap it to William Alfred:
