Hi

Alfred H Mills was the son of Thomas Mills and Mary Alice(Gregory) and settled in Australia (Sydney area) early 1900`s. They travelled from Sunnyside Utah USA. They orginate from Leigh in Lancashire England. His mother Mary Alice was Aunt to my mother.
Alfred is reported to have died on the 23/7/1964.
Other members of the family may be buried at Rookwood Cem.Sydney NSW although I can find no trace when I search. Thomas 1874...1956. Mary Alice 1873....1935.

Does anyone have information on Alfred H. whether he married etc....
And just one last thought...his sister Edith Annie 1895.....1919 may have wed a Mr. Ridden in Australia ....reported as 26/6/1915 Balmain NSW can anyone confirm this?

Many Thanks.......

Hello,

Yes, no sign of those two in Rookwood Independent.

Death #32495/1964 MILLS ALFRED HECTOR THOMAS MARY ALICE BURWOOD

Marriage #562/1923 MILLS ALFRED H ARDOUIN ROSE B SYDNEY

Confirmation of marriage to follow.

The Sydney Morning Herald - Saturday 15 March 1947
SILVER WEDDING
MILLS-ARDOUIN -March 10, 1922 at St Michael's C of E Darlinghurst by Rev. A. Morris, Rose Beatrice to Alfred Hector only son of Thomas Mills, Darlinghurst. Present address 12 Mayfair Crescent, Beverly Hills.

That is very curious. Usually only events in the least two weeks of December get registered in the following year. That is a long delay for some reason ???

Regards,

Dave

welcome kath.

On-line newspapers only go to 1954 so far so can't check past that date. I can't see the 1915 marriage in the newspaper.

Probable:

Births Mar 1902
MILLS Elsie Leigh 8c 295

An error in the index:

Births Jun 1900
Mills Alfred Rector Leigh 8c 310

Regards,

Dave

I'll see if I can find some other way of confirming it is June.

hi
Alfred Hector Mills and Rosie Beatrice Ardouin were once my in-laws. Alfred was born in March 1900 in Yorkshire and died 23rd July 1964 at Sefton NSW. Rosie was born in London on 19th October 1900 and died in Sydney 6th September, 1980.
I was married to their adopted son, Ronald Gregory, who died in Allawah on 27th September, 1997. We had two sons.
Alfred and Rosie (she preferred to be called Rose) ran a successful dry cleaning business, first from 34 Haldon St, Lakemba and then expanded to a factory in Belmore. They kept the shop in Lakemba and opened others at Punchbowl, Kingsgrove and Belmore.
They moved from Lakemba to live at Mayfair Cres Beverly Hills and after selling the business, they went to live in Sefton. After Alf died. Rosie sold the house and moved to a flat in Westmead.
Alfred's sister, Elsie was married to Ernest Burns and they had two sons, Ronald Gregor Burns and Ernest Burns jnr.
I have some documents and letters containing more info, if anyone is interested.

Hello

Many thanks for the information on Alfred H Mills. This family is of special interest to me. Alfred would have been my mother`s cousin. I have some history on the Mills but would love to know more!! Alfred`s mother Mary Alice (nee Gregory) was my grandmother`s sister. Another sister lived in Canada. If you are able to share any further information, especially photos I would be most grateful. The birth of Alfred was in fact Leigh Lancashire not Yorkshire

Kind regards
Kath

Hello Kath, sorry for the delay in answering but I have had family health problems and also computer problems. I always thought that Alf was born in Yorkshire, thanks for giving me the correct info. Are you based in the UK or in Australia and also are you only interested in dates and places or would you like to hear some stories about Alfred because he was a lovely man, a real gentleman?
I have been going through old photographs and I am still to explore some old boxes which are stored in the top of the wardrobe. I have found a lovely old sepia photo of Alfred as a young man but can't send it until I get my scanner working properly.
Alfred's sister, Elsie, was a very kind and gentle lady, who had suffered from Polio at some time which left her with a disbility in one leg. She and her family were members of the Church of the Latter Day Saints, in Sydney so you may be able to obtain some info from them.
I have been wracking my brains to remember where Alfred was buried,I know it was a new lawn cemetery in Sydney's outskirts, I have been there but for the life of me I can't remember the name of the place, There are so many new suburbs in Sydney. However, it will come to me eventually.
I have found a letter, which Rose sent to me after Alfred's death. Here is an extract:
"Dear Eva, I can hardly write as I have had such a dreadful shock, and it is so lonely without Alf. He died with a Cerebral Hemorrage Stroke, and went unconcious in my arms at home 20 minutes later. He never regained conciousness. We were both looking forward to seeing you on the 17th. Ron has been staying with me and arranged all the funeral for me, in fact he has been a wonderful comfort."
Alfred's and Rose's adopted son, Ron, was murdered in Sydney, in 1997, he was shot in the head as he opened his door. I can give you more details if you are interested.
Also, I don't know whether you aware that Thomas Mills remarried in later life. I can't remember the lady's name, everyone called her Nan and she was much younger than Thomas. The family wasn't very happy about this event but the lady looked after him very well, she was a wonderful cook and kept his clothes clean and the little house in Paddinton was spotless, so I couldn't see the harm in it.
So Kath, I've been rambling on here. If you let me know what info you would like, I'll try to answer you. When I get this box working properly again, I'll send you some photos.
Regards,
Eva
