Hi folks.
Has anyone used the messaging service on Anc. While contact from potential family members is well received, there are those who just want to fish for information.
I have a rake of those who have no actual tree or connection, which I generally ignore, but apparently I cannot delete those messages according to Anc. But they did say I can delete replies to any messages. But I complained that was half a job, and wasn't a satisfactory answer.
They replied with....................

'Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. We're always ready to help and regret any annoyance experienced. Generally, you should not be required to sign in repeatedly to view a new message unless a long period of inactivity has taken place. Can we check if you are perhaps receiving an email notification regarding a new message and following the email link or simply periodically entering the message centre to check if a new message has arrived?
Sometimes being signed out constantly can be a sign of a browser related issue. We would suggest as a first step carrying out some light troubleshooting just in case this is being caused by something small. This guide runs through one or two tasks which may help https://support.ancestry.co.uk/.../Fixing-Page-or-Button... .
In terms of deleting a message, this can be achieved by following the few steps outlined here https://bit.ly/3in9OUJ . Please note that you can only currently delete messages you have sent.
We hope that this information will help you progress and we look forward to chatting again soon'

So I asked when can I delete received messages. They replied with................

'Thank you for getting back to us so quickly. We recognise your wish to have as many options in your tool kit as possible. At this time, we do not have a confirmed date for when this additional option will come on stream and are grateful for your patience. We launched our updated message centre a number of months ago and are busily adding new features and options. You might like to try out our new photo sharing option in the mean time which launched last month https://support.ancestry.co.uk/.../Sharing-Photos-from.... Thank you for your understanding and ongoing support.'.

I replied with................

'No interest in sharing photos unless asked for in the messaging service to a family member.
Shouldn't you be fixing what's wrong, instead of adding other new features. It seems easy enough to delete received messages, if I can delete sent messages. Half a job done, in my opinion. So it's hardly an updated messaging service if it only half works'.

They replied with.............

We understand Steve and are grateful for your feedback. We trust in time that you will see many improvements and new options released and thank you for your patience.

I gave up at that point. o_O:rolleyes::oops::mad:

I think their response is implying 'You've paid for it, so you are getting it whether you want it or not!'

Unfortunately what they call improvements re not necessarily seen as such by others. I suppose you get what you pay through the nose for.

Steve,
I understand your frustration with received messages, and how some do fish for information. However, until recently I was one of those with no Ancestry tree. If I did message someone, I would always explain my connection, and explain how I had a tree elsewhere on the net. If they responded, I would usually give them details how to access my tree.
I now have a tree on Ancestry, after having my mind changed on a thread on another forum.
Still don't get responses to a lot of my messages. :(

Darren,
There are many messages that I answered to, and never received a thank you, or even looked at my reply.
But it's really not about that, it's the amount of old received messages that I cannot delete, even though I can delete my own replies to them.
I find that rather odd, that I can delete mine, but not any others sent to me.
I suppose they'll pile up to overflowing, I do not know if there is even a limit for the inbox/outbox. I guess I will find out when, and if, it crashes.:ROFLMAO:

I can identify with this. I had a slightly different issue, people could write to me but I couldn't reply using internet explorer so I wrote to them.
They told me their site was best compatible with Firefox and Google Chrome.

After some updates I was due, I'm happy to say that I can now reply to messages sent with Internet Explorer. I don't know what it is with Ancestry, but I always feel like they want to blame the customer for having problems with the site, your either using the wrong browser or you need to clear the cookies as if that will make it ok!!

I've had a different experience with FMP, a couple of times things were not going right especially as I couldn't even sign in about a month ago. I wrote to them and they replied we've looked into it and we think you should be able to sign in now, and they were right.
No argument they knew they had a problem and got it fixed.

I've had more issues with Ancestry than I've had hot dinners, I'm glad someone out there can own up to their issues and not blind you with future changes.

Amanda

Yes the hints are a right pain. Most them for me are for the USA, which I have no interest in.
They have also changed the way of adding them to something more complicated, when it was easy enough in the first place. Why change something that does not need fixing.

I can't remember the amount of rubbish hints there are across all the trees I have, there are 10's of thousands I haven't deleted.

I try not to use the so called messaging service as I have had some gone missing as the recipients say they never got them.
I try to get them to use good old email much more user friendly (although I have emails that went walk about)
