My great auntie could cook a terrific homemade meat pie
My grandmother's sunday roast will never be forgotten
My mother-in-laws pumpkin scones were talk of the family
Apparently my great grandmother could cook apple pies like no one else.

I have tried recipes from great grandparents recipes books over the years and to this day i can not get the same end product they did.
The ancesters seem to have a knack for cooking. Maybe there is something to be said about handmixing and cooking in wood stoves instead of the modern conviences of today.

Hello A very full Glen,
I havent had a meal cooked on a wood stove for many years but i do remember what they tasted like. YUMMY! You remember how the cordial was made back then? Mum would buy a bottle of cordial of some sort and have to boil water and sugar in a big boiler on the wood stove and when it got to a certain temp. mix the cordial into the water, wait for it to cool and bottle it.[well something along them lines] I dont remember mum cooking so much on that stove but i remember watching her make the coridal as we only got it once a year at xmas so it was a big thing.

Hi Gibbo..have learnt that my Grandmother Milly Barfoot was a brilliant cook..leaving school at 14 she went in service moving to London ware her employers trained her...she was the eldest of nine however and when she returned home(Hedge End,nr Southampton),she worked in a grand house ware her wages helped keep the family going.
Since meeting my father he has told me how at Xmas she would cook goose and all year round she cooked brilliant dishes on a low budget.
During WW2 she had a grocers and her generous nature often giving local people food as they were poor made her a much treasured person in the Town.

Hello Lee
They were brilliant werent they! I think they took a lot of pride in their cooking. Food and money were both scarce yet they produced the very dishes we are talking about now. I have the convience of modern help and plenty of food on hand yet cant produce the same quality food.

A question for all you Aussies. Marmite or Vegemite.

I reckon you can't beat the original Marmite.:)

My Gran used in her stews and casseroles, and no one can make her food, like I remember it.

Vegemite is a poor substitute, being the new kid on the block.:2fun: :2fun: >:D

We're happy little Vegemites
As bright as bright can be.
We all enjoy our Vegemite
For breakfast, lunch and tea.
Our Mummies say we're growing stronger
Every single week
Because we love our Vegemite.
We all adore our Vegemite.
IT PUTS A ROSE IN EVERY CHEEK!
We're growing stronger every week!

It makes me want to chuck.>:D >:D

You did pretty well with the song Steve! i didnt even know all of it. There is a new vegemite out now, they have mixed it with something, butter i think.
I dont mind the old vegemite but only thinly spread on toast, my son has it thick as which i find is sickning.

we OZ are most upset that anyone would denigrate our national icon

Hi Glen
Hang in there with me on this one!! There are not a lot of Aussies on here so we have to stick together and defend our vegemite. My brother in law lives in France and when ever he comes home for holidays he takes a few jars of it back with him. His kids were born and bred in France and they love the old aussie vegemite.

In the words of Kenny Everett..... "It's all done in the best possible taste".

So you prefer Vegemite then Glen.

And Gibbo, as for putting butter in it..........sacrilege. Why can't they leave it alone.

So it's 2 to one for Vegemite.:(

Theres still time to put your vote in before the lines close.:)

I've never had vegemite, so theres always a first time. Do like marmite
spread thick, then after that drink loads of water as it makes you thirsty.

My mum was a trained cook in the army, cant beat her suet syrup pudding or steak and kidney pie. I dont think I ever tasted my dads mums cooking, dad liked his food really well done and his onions incinerated, so just as well I never savoured her culinary delights. :D

Hi there you Aussies

I think someone is breaking the rules, so I am going to put a spanner in the works .

I have both of them in my house. So there !

One grandson likes Vegemite and the others prefer Marmite, so that makes it 3 Marmite to 1 Vegemite !!!
