My ancestor was William Beversham, born c1550, in Aldeburgh. He later became Mayor of Orford, Suffolk on the Suffolk coast, and was the Mayor in 1593. He was also a merchant.
Well in 1593, Roger Rawe, mayor of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and William Beversham, Mayor of Orford, had an agreement for £35 by Beversham to Rawe, and Beversham covenant that Beversham shall not pay duties on certain goods shipped from the River Tyne and from the Port of Newcastle.
Obvs William did trade with Newcastle a lot, from his port in Orford over 200 miles southwards. Wonder if Beversham ever visited Newcastle himself, and how the above agreement was carried out?
I know a Thomas Beversham of Walberswick was a mariner in 1520.
