Ancestors and leaving wills.

Wills can be very valuable in our research but as we know more people did not leave a will than those who did. On estimate about 20% of our ancestors left a will. Many of them were gentry, royalty, doctors, lawyers, of course but also tradesmen and even labourers.

But many tradesmen also did not leave a will. And people who had a property did not always leave one either. I think many people came to a private arrangement or the will was never proved. I think a private agreement was quite common. I have some ancestors who had a business/house of their own but never left a will.
