Ancestors who never used their middle names.

My 3xgreat grandfather Thomas Roberts was baptised Thomas John Roberts in Kent in 1813. The only other mention if his middle name was his death cert in 1889 which said Thomas John Roberts aged 76, so born about 1813. And when his daughter wed in 1884 she mentioned his middle name.

But Thomas himself never used it on childrens birth certs, as amiddle initial on censuses, his marriage certs, his first wifes death certs, electoral rolls and such. Making it 10 times harder to trace him due to the commonness of the first and surname.
