Hello,

It can't be either of these:

Deaths Sep 1867
Anderson Elizabeth 90 Barton 8c 343

Deaths Mar 1894
Anderson Elizabeth Johnson 76 Barton I. 8c 406

Her MS = TAYLOR. :)

Hello,

Knowing Elizabeth's maiden name was TAYLOR might not help. Also, looking at the deaths in RD Barton I. for Elizabeth ANDERSON perhaps she is not living in the same place in 1861. ???

In 1861 there is a son Richard ANDERSON b. 1813 Preston living in Chorlton-Upon-Medlock and his occupation is Upholsterer. I wonder if Elizabeth moved there.

EDIT: At the moment I don't know if Richard is single or married in 1861.

Regards,

Dave

Hello,

An alternative way in the hope Elizabeth b. abt 1792 Preston is with her son Robert b. 1815 Preston and his family. This is son Robert and his family in 1851:

1851
Chorlton Upon Medlock, All Saints, Lancashire (registration district decayed)
ANDERSON Robert head 1816 age 35 upholster Lancashire Preston
ANDERSON Eliza wife 1817 age 34 Cheshire Northerich (could be Northwich)
ANDERSON Robert son 1844 age 7 Lancashire Manchester &&
-
(The rest of census is black)

The additional children in 1861 would be:

Emma b. Dec Q 1849 Chorlton &&
Esther W. b. Mar Q 1853 Chorlton &&

&& These three departed Plymouth on 4 Oct 1863 for Australia.

Please see if Robert b. 1815 and his family can be found in 1861. Thanks.

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave

I've had no luck finding Elizabeth, in fact I can't find her other children in post 1. Richard is a widower in 1861.

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much.

It's possible all those listed in post #1 died before the next census.

Yes, that is the death of Robert, senior.

Yes, that is the death of a daughter of Robert, junior. They named another daughter Esther and added a middle name hence W = Wilkinson.

All three marked && must have been in England in 1861. Shipping record says parents ??? were already in the colony. Certainly Robert b. 1815 was because I have his death in Victoria.

Surname: ANDERSON
Given Names: Robt
Event: D
***: M
Spouse Surname/Father: Robt
Spouse Gvn Names/Mother: Elizabeth UNKNOWN
Age: 74
Age Code:
Birth Place:
Death Place: South Melbourne
Year: 1889
Reg. Number: 17754

The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848-1954) - Tuesday 22 October 1889 p.1
DEATHS
ANDERSON.-On the 19th inst., at the residence of his son-in-law, John Abbott, of Montague-street, Albert-park, Robert Anderson, of Manchester, England, upholsterer, in his 75th year. Father of Robert and Charles Thomas Anderson, and Emma (Mrs. Abbott) and Esther Wilkinson (Mrs. Williams).

However I can't find him so I don't know if he left England before or after the 1861 census. I actually have his spouse Eliza (nee MORRIS) as having died in England. No death has yet been found in Australia. Also no firm death in England either although there are several Eliza/Elizabeth ANDERSONs that could fit. If the shipping record is correct about 'parents' then she did come to Australia and we need to look again for her death.

Eliza ANDERSON (nee MORRIS) c. 14 Apr 1816 Great Budworth, Cheshire, England
- parents Stephen & Mary

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Still to find in shipping records Robert b. 1815 and possibly his spouse Eliza b. 1816 Northwich, Cheshire and son Charles Thomas b. 1845 Chorlton/ Manchester.

Charles Thomas ended up in NSW where he married in 1874 but must have arrived by 1868. I presume he arrived via Victoria because his spouse died in Victoria I presume on a visit to the family there.

Hello crankypants,

Re those in post #1 between 1851 and 1861 it's impossible to say with the names, even Maria, being so common. No death in Barton upon Irwell for any of them so they could have died anywhere in Lancashire.

Dave

Hi Dave

I can't see a death in Victoria that fits your Eliza ANDERSON.
No Eliza ANDERSON indexed on the UK Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878-1960. Unless she returned to U.K before 1878.

*still checking 1861 census.

Hello crankypants,

Thanks. Perhaps you can find something to add to this. Normally they say if both parents are living or not. So if Eliza did die in England then shipping record for her children should say so.

Departed Plymouth 4 Oct 1863 Arrived Sydney (in quarantine) 18 Jan 1864
ANDERSON Robert 20 'Ida' 1864 Sydney and relations Reel 2139, [4/4798]; Reel 2482, [4/4986]
ANDERSON Emma 14
ANDERSON Esther 10

Children of parents in the colony - labourer, servant, - Manchester CofE Both

If we say she died in England that leaves Robert b. 1815 and son C T. Robert certainly arrived before 4 Oct 1863 and C T before 1868.

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. I don't really know why I had Eliza marked as having died in England. I also don't know why it was marked that they all arrived and lived in Victoria first before C T moved to NSW. So it's the other way round. Robert and son, together or not, arrived in NSW and then Robert moved to Victoria.

Dave

Hello crankypants,

I've had no luck so far going through the ads in NLA in 1850s & 1860s looking for ANDERSON upholsterers.

Charles ANDERSON & Co. shipping agents. That's not him.

A Robert ANDERSON looking for teachers for a private school. That's not him.

This could be the son who arrived in 1864.

Sands Directory N.S.W 1865
ANDERSON Robert, upholsterer, Crown-street
