Hi

Looking for Ann's birth/bap/parents.

In 1851 she says her PoB is Eaton Constantine, Shropshire. Ref: HO107; Piece: 1991; Folio: 320; Page: 12

She married Edward Hill in 1822 at Condover.

Many thanks
Geoff

Shropshire Baptisms on FMP have four Ann Griffiths b 1796 - 1798 (ref age given as 54 in 1851). two of these are not near Eaton Constantine, the other two are:-

Shrewsbury St Mary
12 Feb 1797, Ann d.o. Samuel & Mary

Condover
21 Oct 1798, Mary Ann d.o. Richard & Ann

Condover would be favourite but would a Mary Ann later be known as Ann ?

Looking at the image of the marriage in 1822 it says "with consent of James Hill" presumably the father of Edward who must have been under 21, i.e. when he gives his age as 53 in 1851 he must be adding a few years, possibly because his wife is older than him, in which case can we trust her given age?

Just checked the Eaton Constantine PR's, there appears to be only a William and Ann Hill baptising offspring about that time, the only Edward is this:

10 Jul 1797 Edward, s. of William & Ann Hill, bap.

I can't see an Ann Griffiths

No, there is no mention of Ann's father on the marriage image, the two witnesses are James and Sarah Hill.

I looked at 12 marriages, 7 needed consent:- Edward Hill and one where the consenter had the same surname as the bride. However the other 5 needed consent from people with totally different names from the bride and groom. Usually this person was also a witness. One man gave consent and witnessed twice but did not have the same name as any of the brides/grooms. Perhaps if you were in bonded service you needed consent from your master and it wasn't just a matter of being under age ? Perhaps Edward could have been working for James Hill who wasn't his father?

Ann Griffiths
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 24 Sep 1803
Christening Place: EATON UNDER HEYWOOD,SHROPSHIRE,ENGLAND
Father's Name: John Griffiths
Mother's Name: Mary

Indexing Project (Batch) Number: P01571-1 , System Origin: England-ODM , GS Film number: 599489

A bit young
Not necessarily, could have been b. 1796-1798 and bap 1803..

Eaton under Heywood is about 10-15 miles S of Condover, Eeaton Constantine is about 10 miles E of Condover, so not out of the running.

If she was bap at St Edith's, Eaton under Heywood [Anglican], same denomination as the marriage. St. Edith's also in the deanery of Condover.

Too much of a coincidence?

1841
Edward [Edwin/Edrie] is with the correct family [Maria aged 1y].
There is a William [75] and Ann [75] with a George [35] fits with Edward's brother living next door. William and Edward are both shoe makers which fits for Edward.

William and Ann are missing in 1851, probably had died. George [now mar.] and his family are still there, with Edward and his family next door, Maria aged 11y is there which confirms correct family.

William and Ann look to be Edward's parents.

The problem appears to lie with the 1822 marriage

There is a James Hill = Sarah Powell 1821 Condover, one of the witnesses is Edward Hill. So possibly father or a sibling, if the same James & Sarah

Interesting how Edward has been so consistent with DoB and PoB including his death age 73y in 1870..

Unable to find Ann's death..

This looks to be her in 1871 with son, William. Can't see her in 1881

Town: Eaton Constantine
County: Shropshire
RD: Atcham
ED: 2; Piece: 2768; Folio: 19; Page: 5

Ann Hill 74 [b. Longwood*] * Very close to Eaton C.
William Hill 36 [b. Eaton C. Shoemaker]
