Grandson of Richard Hungerford, The Island, Clonakilty, he married Catherine Loane on 1st February, 1813 while captain of the South Cork Militia. Due to indifferent health and the grants of lands in Australia, he left Cork on 14th December, 1827 on the brigantine "The Alexander Henry" with his wife and 8 children, a school master, an overseer and several servants, making a total of 17 in all. The ship's hold was filled with farm equipment, furniture and household belongings. After a journey of 6 months they arrived in Sydney, narrowly escaping from a pirate attack off the coast of Africa. He was the first Hungerford to settle in Australia.
