I recently sent off for a copy of my father's birth certificate.

It shows the name Joseph Thomas born June 8th 1905 in West Derby, Liverpool.

His mother was shown as Annie Harrison of 147 Smithdown Road, Liverpool but the father's name was absent. The 1911 shows nobody at this address, so if somebody could help me with any more information I would gladly appreciate it. My surname is Ward, so some time later my father's and possibly his mother's surname were changed to that.

Hi Dennis

A warm welcome to FHUK forums.

When you say Joseph Thomas, was Thomas his middle name or was that his surname he was registered under? Was it actually Joseph Thomas Harrison?

Ben

Thanks for the welcome.

I have one very old short birth certificate which says 'Joseph Thomas Harrison Ward' but without any other information. I have no idea when this was issued.

I sent off for the full one recently and this has 'Joseph Thomas' under Name and Annie Harrison (housekeeper) under Mother, residing at 147 Smithdown Road.

Both have the same date of birth and both were registered at West Derby,
Liverpool on the 29th June 1905.

Hi Dennis,

Looking at the 1911 census index there is a Thomas Joseph Ward born 1904 in the district of West Derby also putting Annie in as other household member brought this one up. To view household transcripts cost 10 credits to see the census image costs 30 credits, this is on the findmypast site.

Thanks Julie. Yes I have already come across this one. It is 6 Horne Street Liverpool but as you say the date (1904) is wrong but also the mother is Mary Ward.

The Annie you found there is also only 6 months old.

No. It just says 'Annie Harrison a housekeeper' under Name of mother and 'A Harrison mother 147 Smithdown Road' under signature.

The father is left blank.

I can't understand though why I can't find anybody living at 147 Smithdown Road. Maybe the address was fictitious or maybe it had a name?

I have just found this link which is very interesting indeed.

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/ENG-LIVERPOOL/2001-12/1007818746

145 Glasstone Chas. picture frame makr
147 Winter Mrs. L'Inor costumier
147 Rooney Mrs. Emily midwife
151 Robinson Vicars watchmaker

There was a midwife living at 147. So I can only assume the baby was born there with the midwife's help.

But It doesn't help me one bit in finding any more information.

Thanks a lot, Julie. I have just looked on the google map and Smithdown Lane is near to Smithdown Road. The date for Annie also looks very promising. She would have been about 18/19 when my father was born.

Wow Mary that is interesting. At first I discarded this but having thought more about it you could well be right. It would fit in more or less with the age of Annie (from Liverpool) and my father.

And I do remember visiting people in Leeds when I was a lad.

I will ask my aunt (mother's side) if she knows anything about this possibility.

Thank you very much.
