He joined the Royal Navy as an Ordinary Seaman on 5th July 1828 at Chatham. His Majesty's ship Crocodile's papers describe him as a Painter by trade, 5 ft 2 inches in height, of fair complexion and with Dark Hair and Eyes.

I won't post the full story but Andrew was discharged in Sydney from HMS Crocodile in 1829. Somehow a convict got hold of the discharge papers and used them and Andrew's name to marry.

I bet that caused some problems

Yes. The convict remained at large for several years before being found out and charged before the court.

Andrew named a son Peter.

Thanks Geoff.

I have not seen Asplin in any of the names I have. The only odd one I have as a first and for another a middle name, is Newman.

A painter married the daughter of a house painter

We have gone off on a tangent but well short of post #64.
Yep, still some leeway to catch up

I suppose we have to try and work out why Flood, there's no obvious marriage, though she was only abt 19y when she mar. Andrew

It's not an error in the index becasue it is Flood on the film of the church register. That is a Volume past 123 so it's from a different set of films. A set that is a true copy of the register. The Vol 1 - 123 set of films is a copy of the form, with some details from the register, that the church had to send to the Registrar General.

I can't look it up at local library but it is RC St Mary's Sydney - same church as Andrew & Sarah.

72/1823 V182372 128 FLOOD PATRICK DONOVAN MARY LD
74/1823 V182374 127 FLOOD PATRICK DONOVAN MARY LD

Next time I get to the Mitchell Library I'll browse the film of the marriage register. That might have to be early May. I'm very busy for the next 3 weeks.
