Hello,

Piece: SCT1841/622 Place: Barony -Lanarkshire Enumeration District: 13A
Civil Parish: Barony Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: Shettleston
Folio: 191 Page: 3
Address: Burgher Street
Surname First name(s) *** Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
AROLL John M 56 Cotton Hand Loom Weaver Lanarkshire
AROLL Agness F 40 Lanarkshire
AROLL Walter M 18 Cotton Hand Loom Weaver Jrnymn Lanarkshire
AROLL John M 13 Cotton Hand Loom Weaver Appr Lanarkshire
AROLL James M 4 Lanarkshire
AROLL Janet F 14 Cotton Hand Loom Weaver Lanarkshire
AROLL Mary F 6 Lanarkshire

I'd like a look up please for this family in 1851.

John died 15 Oct 1858 at 11 McEwan street Bridgeton, Lanark aged 75.

AROL, AROLL, ARROL, ARROLL, ARRAL, ARAL, ARALL, EARL...

I suspect this is not the John in my tree so if he is the informant for the death of his father Walter then the author of a book on the family has made a huge mistake. According to the Paisley Paupers index John died before 17 Feb 1853 and has not been found in 1841 or 1851. Spouse Ann is head of the house in Paisley in 1841 and listed as a widow in 1851. Remotely possible that spouse John was in Lanark in 1841.

Regards,

Dave

Hello Barbara,

Thank you very much.

I cannot possibly see how that John who died at 11 McEwan street could possibly be the spouse of Ann nee TYTLER:

The John who died in McEwan street was the informant for the death of his father Walter. (Walter married a Mary - date unknown).

Ann TYTLER married John - the fiche in Paisley Library has 20 May

FR1712 20 May 1815 Low Church, Paisley

Marriage 10 April 1815 (Abbey)
John Arrol of this parish and Ann Tytler of Paisley, were booked and proclaimed in order to marriage.

Ann's parents are William & Christina

Known children:

William b. abt 1820
James b. abt 1822
Christian/Christina b. abt 1823
Janet b. abt 1824
Elizabeth b. abt 1828
Mary b. abt 1831

I agree it's possible William was not the first born but that pattern does not point to John's parents being Walter & Mary.

It seems there is no likely birth/baptism in the records for my John. Unlikely to be the son of a Duncan & Rose of Greenock.

No if they followed the patterns either his father was William too or there was another boy before William. Looks like his mother was prob Janet?

I wish I knew for sure if any children were born before William.

Walter & Mary or Duncan & Rose and no others seem to fit date and place. So stuck with not knowing John's parents.
