Another reason why a baptism cannot be found.

Nonconformist ancestors. I believe nonconformist records survive to a degree but many of them have not survived.

With the new Essex records released, I am still unable to find the baptism and parentage of Nathan Jackson Quilter born c1752 in Essex. He married twice in Hatfield Peveral then Rettendon and the wintesses seem to be from their brides side or friends. His will only mentions wife and children, no siblings or cousins. I am beginning to think his family were nonconformists and he was baptised in an independent chapel, or not baptised at all.

Looks possible, Ben.. There is a Jabez Bap.1813, Leigh and Matilda bap. 1817 Leigh can both be found in the Non-Conformist register Father = Nathan Jackson Quilter. That said he would be a good age and may be the s/o your Nathan Jackson Quilter.

What was her name and when and who did she marry?

I would have thought with a Nathan Jackson Quilter, it would be easy but seems not. His middle name is a clue to perhaps his mothers maiden name or a family name further back. Witnesses to his first married in 1775 to Sarah Richmond was William Richmond and John Cooper. His 2nd marrige in Rettendon in 1783 has Richard Underwood and Richard Harrington as witnesses.

My one is Sarah Quilter c1797 Bramber, Essex, according to the 1851 but there is no Bramber in Essex. She married John Beckwith in
24 Apr 1817 • Stisted, Essex, one of the witnesses was Mary Quilter.

I think I have Sarah Richmond's family, and if the right baptism, then it makes her 11 years older than Nathan Quilter. When Sarah married in 1776 one of the witnesses was William Richmond. In 1761 a William Richmond of Burnham On Crouch married and the signature on the marriage licence matches that of the witness to Sarah's 1776 marriage. William was baptised in 1732 in Burnham, son of Jonathan and Mary, and a Sarah was baptised there in 1740, daughter of John and Mary. She died in 1781, no age given but if the 1740 baptism is right, she was 41.

UPDATE:

I may have found a sister for Nathan Jackson Quilter. Susannah Quilter, born c1751 died 1787. Susannah wed Richard Parker in 1771, witnesses John Skitter and Joseph Bowles. Susannah and Richard had a son Nathan Parker in North Fambridge. In 1817 Nathan Quilter made a William Parker of North Fambridge an executor of his will.

In 1764, a Joseph Bowles wed Ann Quilter, widow in Rochford. Witness John Skitter. Other witness was a regular one. Nathan Jackson Quilter's 2nd wife was Lucy Skitter.
