I'd like a look up please for a James VERNON, spouse Barbara and son John in 1851.

Births Mar Qtr 1845
VERNON John Poole 8 85

Obituary says John was born in England and that he arrived in Australia abt 1854. I have not found the marriage of his parents yet but I suspect James and Barbara were born in Scotland. Others in the family were Tea merchants.

Thanks,

Dave

Is Barbara coming from the obituary or death? Looks like it could be wrong as the only Barbara is unmarried in the 1851 unless Ellen is his second wife?

Hello Barbara,

Thanks.

The obituary for John Dixon, former NSW Auditor-General, 1924:

Deceased was 79, and came to Australia aged 9. Spouse died about 20 months earlier, hence these are the death reg:

NSW Death 4256/1923 VERNON MARY - JAMES - EUPHEMIA M - HORNSBY

NSW Death 8248/1924 VERNON JOHN - JAMES - BARBARA - HORNSBY

So, I don't know yet. The informant could have made an error or James married twice. This is a related family so I think Dorset is correct:

1841
HO107 Piece 294 Book/Folio 1/33 Page 4
Civil Parish: Blandford Forum
County: Dorset
Registration District: Blandford
ED: 2
Address:
John Vernon Head 30 Grocer Scotland
Janet Vernon 25 Scotland
Alexander Vernon 20 Tea Dealer Scotland
James Milbroy 20
Thomas Milbroy 15
James McWilliam 15
Mary Ann James 20
Janet Menzies 3 Dorset

Mary nee MENZIES.

Euphemia nee VERNON. Middle name M= Murray.

Marriage 1361/1871 VERNON JOHN - MENZIES MARY - CONCORD

Mary's mother was a VERNON and Mary married a VERNON.

Ellen Brown
birth: 14 June 1816
christening: 22 September 1816 SKINNER STREET-INDEPENDENT,POOLE,DORSET,ENGLAND
father: John Brown
mother: Sarah

Ellen might have died in Victoria. Don't know yet when they came to NSW.

Deaths:
251/1876 VERNON ELLEN - THOMAS - REBECCA - SYDNEY * not this one - Thomas is still alive
4123/1880 VERNON ELLEN - FRANCIS - ELLEN - REDFERN
3204/1909 VERNON ELLEN - JOHN - ELIZA - RYDE
25020/1919 VERNON ELLEN - RICHARD N - MARY A - BURWOOD * aged 81 widow of Donald

Others not in Ryerson

I'd go for the one in Ryde with an error for her mother's name.

Not today.

It looks like a 2nd marriage for James.

I don't know the connection between the 2 VERNON familes yet.

We have Euphemia VERNON born abt 1811:

Death 11985/1895 MENZIES EUPHEMIA M - JOHN - EUPHEMIA - BURWOOD

MENZIES Euphemia Murray Death notice 31DEC1895 Death 84 at Burwood SMH 03JAN1896

Death of brother James:

3989/1894 VERNON JAMES - JOHN - EUPHEMIA - BURWOOD

By the 1851 census James was born abt 1811 also.

That's one VERNON family originally from Scotland we don't have in 1841.

This is the other family:

Thanks Geoff.

So it looks as though Barbara is an error in death reg.

Yes, drapers and tea dealers. :)

So the question now: Is James a brother of John, Janet & Alexander 1841 Blandford and William:

1851
Glastonbury, Somerset
William Vernon Postmaster & Grocer born abt 1815 Scotland
Mary Ann wife
Address: Glastonbury St John and St Benedict.

1861 in Dorchester Tea Dealer and Draper Born abt 1816 Scotland

James abt 1809
Euphemia abt 1811
John abt 1811 or earlier
Janet abt 1816 or earlier
William abt 1816
Alexander abt 1820 or earlier

Parents should be John VERNON & Euphemia (MURRAY ?)
