Any offers of help in tracing my husband's family?

Hi, I am trying to trace my husband Philip's family. He knows absolutely nothing about them as he came to NZ from the UK as a baby and has never met his family from the UK. His full name is Philip Anthony Pottinger, born on 18 June 1950 in Balham, London.
I have a little bit of information - not much unfortunately. His father's name was Oliver Pottinger born in South Shields on 5 March 1909. His Grandfather was named Laurence Pottinger and he was married to Dora (nee Richardson). His mother was Dorothy Ann Pottinger (nee Carr) born in Morpeth on 2 November 1913. I do not have any information about her parents. At the time of his father's birth, his parents were living at 274 Alice Street, South Shields.
If anyone can help, I would be eternally grateful as I am coming up against brick walls because I have to pay to join websites to get any more information.
It would be great to get some more information about his family as we are planning a trip back to the UK next year and we would love to meet them!

Have you tried the british phone book? just enter the surname and the location. There are 3 on there for your Pottinger for the area of Balham. Could be rellies maybe??

Oliver and Dorothy were married apr/jun 1944 at South Shields 10a 1757
They had a daughter Catherine born Jan/Mar 1946 in Battersea, London ref, - 1d 392
Philip was also born Battersea ref 5c 107

There is a Catherine Pottinger who married Michael Horrocks in South Shields apr/jun 1970 ref 1a 1916. I cannot find any children from this marriage

Dorothy A Carr, possible parents Thomas Carr and Dorothy A Duffell, married Dec qtr 1913 at Morpeth ref 10b 778
Oliver Pottinger possible parents, Laurence Pottinger and Dora Richardson married Mar qtr 1902 at South Shields ref 10a 1085

Hi I had a look at this site for Michael Horrocks, South Shields. It comes up with a resulting entry which includes Catherine and a Michael J Smith. You need to buy credits to view address details, so if you do this you should get the rest of their address as on the 2002/3 electorial roll. There are other entries for a Michael Horrocks, but there again you need some credits to view.

I have traced your Pottinger line back to 1841. It would appear the family came fron Burra in the Shetland Isles, and were Fishermen and Crofters.
If you want all the census return details from 1841 to 1911, if you send me a private message including your email address, I'll send them to you.

Hello Mady. My name is Pamela, have just seen your request to find info on relatives. Well my Mum Elizabeth Pottinger had two brothers John and Oliver and two sisters Dolly and Mary. My Mum often told my sister and I how Oliver emigrated to NZ had two children Pip and Katherine. The Pottinger family came from Burra isle in the Shetlands moving to South Shields, where I was born along with many other relatives. Sadly I did not know my Grandpa as he had died many years before. Dora was my Gran Pottinger, would love to hear from you as Pip or Katherine will be my cousin. Please Email regards Pam.
