Hello dave,

Could you please check if the family is at 57 Broomlands street in 1871 or if that part of the census is damaged?

I have a copy of this death certificate:

1873 BLACKLEY ISABELLA F 13 PAISLEY /RENFREW 573/00 0042

and the address was clearly 57 (not 23) Broomlands and Catherine was present at the death.

EDIT: Sorry. They are at 23 Broomlands in 1881 but probably 57 in 1871.

Thanks.

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave and Dave,

Sorry to butt in!

In 1871, the occupants of 57 Broomlands Street, Paisley are

Francelia B?? 57, born Ireland (Could this be Isabella?)
Mary G 34, Mill Weaver born Paisley
--
Ann Bechett 24 daughter, born Paisley
Bechett 11, granddaughter born England
Farrie Bechett 8 granddaughter born England
James Bechett 3 grandson born Glasgow
Sarah Bechett 1 granddaughter born Glasgow
James Gleeson 22 Lodger

This is just as it appears on the transcript, so perhaps it is damaged!

Don't know whether this helps or not!

Josie :)

Hello Josie,

Thank you very much. It looks as though the original is damaged. Let's see who we can match up:

1881
Civil parish: Paisley High Church
23 Broomlands Street
Catherine McNaugton head age 60 ? occ dressmaker born Ireland [Mary is 5 years older]
Isabella Blackley mother age 78 born Ireland
Mary Blackley sister dau age 48 ? occ mill worker born Ireland
Thomas Blackley nephew age 26 occ coal merchant born England
Archibald Brackley nephew age 20 occ servant general born england
Jessie Brackley niece age 19 occ millworker born England
Mary Jane born about 1831 Ireland died 1915 Elderslie (have copy) - age is crazy in all census.

Ann is a sibling and the youngest born abt 1846 and the only one born in Scotland.

The 11 yo has to be Isabella, a daughter of Thomas:

Births Sep 1859
Blackley Isabella Liverpool 8b 50

Farrie has to be Jessie, another daughter of Thomas:

Births Mar 1862
BLAKELEY Jessie Liverpool 8b 79

Regards,

Dave

:2fun:

Now the fun part.

I have no idea how James and Sarah born Glasgow fit in.

I have 6 children to John BLACKLEY master mason & Isabella McGUIRE but only one son Thomas born abt 1831 Ireland (I've just found his death in one of the other topics) who ended up in Lancashire. His spouse Janet NEIL died in 1863.

I may have found James born/registered in 1869 in Lanark but I can't find Sarah.

1869 BLACKLEY JAMES M CARNWATH /LANARK 632/00 0065

I still have no idea how they fit into the family.

I just spent 6 credits (only 6 credits left now) to get the following details:

James BLACKLEY b. 24 March 1869 Pool Row Carnwath, Lanark

Father James a coal miner
Mother Catherine maiden name LOCKIE
23 Sep 1859 Pettinain

Carnwath is about 30 miles south of both Glasgow and Edinburgh. Carnwath is not Glasgow as listed in census so perhaps there is no birth reg for that James or Sarah.

James Bechett 3 grandson born Glasgow
Sarah Bechett 1 granddaughter born Glasgow
To be grandchildren of Isabella I am either missing another son or the only son, Thomas, remarried after Janet (NEIL) died 3 Dec 1863 in Liverpool and he is the father. If he returned to Scotland why Glasgow and not Paisley?

HELP !! :2fun:

So the next question: Can James and Sarah be found in 1881?

I looked again on SP assuming the name was registered with a variation and only confirmed this one as not being mine:

name: Sarah Richardson Blackie
gender: Female
baptism/christening date:
baptism/christening place:
birth date: 27 Mar 1871
birthplace: BRIDGETON,GLASGOW,LANARK,SCOTLAND
death date:
name note:
race:
father's name: James Blackie
father's birthplace:
father's age:
mother's name: Jane Pettigrew
mother's birthplace:
mother's age:
indexing project (batch) number: C11920-1
system origin: Scotland-ODM
source film number: 6035516
reference number:

There seems to be no record on SP for a James and Sarah BLACKLEY (variations) so perhaps with that damaged census return the family name has been assumed to be the same for those two.

Different spelling on SP. Just used my last 6 credits. :D

1863 HOUSTON JOHN BLACKELY JANE CALTON (GLASGOW) GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/04 0323

Jane is 22 and a shirk maker - parents John a weaver deceased and Rebecca M.S. Hutchisen ? deceased.

Names as Blackley so an error in the index.

I can't find Jane's birth or the marriage of John & Rebecca, even in England. ???
