Army Records

Hi all.

I'm wanting to request some family members army personell records which is £30 a head. I just wondered if anyone else had requested such things from the army?

It still costs you £30 even if they find nothing & with 3 family members to research that's quite a sum of money.

I just wondered what everyone elses experiences had been & what sort of time you waited for documents.

Have you tried getting their Medal cards from the National Archives ? That is quite easy and then if you find them , you know that they have a service record

I am in Australia and i have ordered and received one persons army records from WW1. I took the chance that they had the records otherwise as you said if they dont it still costs. I was lucky and received a huge parcel from england containing his records. Some information was non informative but the rest was of interesting reading. For me it was worth it but it is a pot luck situation im afraid. From when i ordered the records to when i recieved them here in Australia took about 5 weeks.

Read this thread with interest......does anyone think it would be worth applying for army records for my grandfather seeing as I only have his full name, the barracks he was in in 1917, and the marriage details while he was a serving soldier in Derby, no army number or regiment known.....it may be a longshot......where do I apply for such records ?......many thanks .....Paul

Hello to both of you if you give what you know about him I will look on a------y,they do have quite a lot of WW1 records, I found my Grandfather's on there. WW2 records are not at the archives yet, they are with the M.O.D, that is probably why you are paying £30. I have never tried to get any WW2 records,

thanks for the answer....what I know is very scant i'm afraid, born Henry Jones in 1892/3.....a serving soldier in army barracks Derby in 1917 the only barracks open at that time were Normanton Barracks, married by the forces chaplain Colin E S Hackforth on july 14th 1917.....to Mary Ellen Shackleton....Henry and Mary resided in Rochdale after the marriage and both Died there....Mary was also born in Rochdale but Henry's birthplace is as yet unknown.....Henry's father was one Thomas Jones who is listed on the marriage cert as a boatman.......the witnesses were Victor Dennis chiddy and mary Bentley......just a thought but the witnesses name would not be a common one......maybe if I looked for his records it could give a clue to the regiment he was in, assuming it was an army buddy of Henry's.........many thanks for your help.........Paul

I'm wondering if Victor Chiddy was in the same reigment as there is a Victor D Chiddy on the WW1 medal index 2nd York and Lancaster Regiment, Military Provost Staff Corps, Military Provost Staff Corps.

That is exactly what I thought when I looked at the witness, Victor D Chiddy was born and married in leeds so he was obviously an army buddy of Henry's......that could just be the break I have been looking for in tracing Henry's regiment....at least it's another line of enquiry to go down....thanks so much for your assistance.......Paul

I was just wondering as I looked up Normanton Barracks whether he belonged to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment who were based there.

Julie has given you another idea. That will keep you occupied for a little while!!

If you google Sherwood Foresters records . There are a lot of sites that might also help either to eliminate or find Henry Jones

I have just been trawling through the records for the york and lancaster and I have found 7 possibles in the medal index....I will go and try the Sherwood Forresters now.....Thanks Maddie..........Paul

was looking for the same thing myself yesterday,and found that most of the records where destroyed via fire in 1940,looked on axxxry,but i didnt find anything ,think its a bit of pot luck and renting a sniffer dog haha,sorry folks got 2 brickwalls at the moment and me heads completly done in.suex

A lot were destoyed, but some did survive. I was lucky that some that I wanted, had.
Did you contact them to find out, as I did.

I didn't really find anyone suitable on a------y, however if you check the free BMD site there is a birth in Dec qr 1892 Rochdale 8e 9 for a Henry Jones, It may not be the right one but I guess it seems from the info you give he may have come from Rochdale too the only sure way to find out is to probably get the birth cert, however it is very annoying if it happens to be the wrong one!, perhaps if you continue looking for a bit more info first

I have checked the Henry Jones from 1892/3 at the town hall Rochdale and it's the wrong one, no father named Thomas......I had a quick look through the medal records for 1914/18 on that well known website and there are 7 possibles from the york and lancaster regiment for those years....I assumed the regiment from the witness on Henrys marriage cert......luckily he had a very unusual name and there was just one soldier by that name.....so it's off to the library tomorrow to look through those 7 Henry Jones.......hopefully one of them will be the right one.....lets hope the medal card gives me some more clues to go on....thanks for your help.........Paul
