Army Service Number confusion??

Well-known member
From my other thread on William Hewitt I have him joining the East Yorkshire Regiment somewhere between 1911 and 1914 and is given the service number of 3/6230 but according to the regimental history this number was issued between 1899 and 1901 so I'm confused as to what is happening here or am I missing something??
