Are you sure that George is Arthur's father? I assume you got it from Arthur's marriage certificate?

The 1901 census says that Arthur is grandson to Maria and that George is son to her but it doesn't say that Arthur is son to George.

The 1881 census shows that John and Maria had a daughter, Mary Ann aged 14 so born ~ 1867. She has left home by 1891. Is it possible that Arthur is her child? It was more usual for a child to stay with it's mother's family if it's parents were not married and also if George was not married to Arthur's mother then Arthur would have probably been registered under his mother's name, not Goodwin.

Thanks, Elaine.

Would normally completely agree with all that. However, on the 1901 transcription for Arthur, it gives this:

"Arthur Goodwin
Age: 13
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1888
Relation to Head: Grandson
Gender: Male
Father: George Goodwin
Birth Place: Iron Bridge, Shropshire, England"

Thanks for pointing that out, Elaine.

It looks as though the enumerator/transcriber had assumed George was the father

There is a tree that points to the father being a sibling of George.

Marriages Q1 1884
Astbury Sarah Ann
Goodwin John
HOBDAY Clara
Jones Robert
Madeley
6a 927

Deaths Q1 1889
Goodwin John

Yes, Maria and John did have a son John aged 17 in 1881 so the correct age to be the John who died in 1889, looks like he was Arthur's father.

Clara Smith died in 1896 and Abraham remarried to Alice Evans in 1898.

Yes, I may still get the birth cert. just to be sure, unless I find a bap. in the meantime.

A bit naughty of that 1901 transcriber to assume George was the father though.

Yes, I have checked the censuses and the birth in 1852 seems to be the correct one.

She was the correct age when living with her parents in 1861 and 71 but must have reduced her age when she married John Goodwin as he was born ~ 1864 so a lot younger than her. Then she just carried on with the pretence with her second husband as he too was younger than her. Even her death was registered to give her birth year as 1862.
Luckily she was far enough from her family to get away with it !
