I didn't find a birth notice in Trove so the 11 Oct 1886 probably came from a tree. It's the right service record also with a different pob.

From what i can work out from Herbert's military records he was 31 years and 3 months age when he signed up, using that and the sign up date he would have been born Jan 1885 so it does give a little room that its possible that your fella would have been born Oct 1885 if their mother had gotten pregnant again straight after Herberts birth.

Can't see why he would make himself one year older. Wish I knew where I got 11 Oct 1886 from.

It's a large reg number which would fit with birth late in the year 1886. If the 1885 birth was a late reg in early 1886 then the reg number would be much smaller.
